Organised by greek and vulgarian anarchists

Published in A-Infos Wednesday, 31 August 2005

The No Border camps and actions have finished. The actions were organized by the Anarcho-Resistance Group, the Anti-Authoritarian Movement, the Group of Refugees and Immigrants (Greece) and the Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative. People came from many different places and some 40-50 people took part in the Bulgarian actions and between 150-200 in Greece.

The purpose of the camps was to publicize issues related to borders, migration, deportation and immigrant rights and, as most of the people at these camps were anarchist, this was done from an anti-statist point of view.

The Bulgarian camp squatted an abandoned former Border Guard station in Kluch, near the borders with Greece and Macedonia. The atmosphere was nice and people from the village (and even nearby villages) constantly came to the camp. Unfortunately the weather was bad. There was not much formally planned to happen there which we found very unfortunate because the general conditions for discussion, planning things, etc, turned out to be better than in Greece where there were too many people and too many cafes. In Bulgaria there were a couple of film screenings and discussions with local people.

In Greece, we saw some local people at concerts, but we don’t know if they came for other events and really other events such as films or discussions barely happened. Most activities focused on demonstrations and parties.

The first demonstration took place at the Bulgarian-Greek border when the group coming from the Bulgarian side crossed carrying banners, flags and chanting slogans. There were some tensions as Bulgarian police tried to confiscate and camera and two vehicles passed too slowly.

There were also demonstrations in Xanthi and Komotini (Greece). The mood of these demonstrations were very good and defiant.

In addition to these demos, there was an action at a deportation center in Venna. Participants clashed with the police in order to gain entrance to the center and find out the names of the people inside. People from Xanthi intend to help the people to get legal aid with the aim of getting them out of the center.
