On Thursday 29th October, the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), under the command of Governor Yeda Crusius, broke into the premises of the Federação Anarquista Gaúcha. Police seized various materials such as posters, minutes of meetings, the hard disk of a computer and also the contents of refuse containers that were at the headquarters. They also tried to intimidate those who came to show their solidarity and names contained in the records of the organization's website. Two comrades were arrested and charged.Not only do we reject this government repression, but we also express our solidarity and support for the comrades of the FAG, for the constant and tenacious work they do with the ordinary people of their city, which the government and police authorities are seeking to silence by terror, intimidation and repression. International anarchist statementSolidarity with the Federação Anarquista GaúchaThe comrades of the FAG have spent years fighting against exclusion and casualisation, defending justice and decent living conditions. They are well known for their work with the "catadores" (collectors of cardboard and recyclable refuse), with the homeless and with the landless. In short, work they have been carrying on for years with those at the bottom of society. This is the reason why the police of the State of Rio Grande do Sul is repressing the comrades of the FAG, a State immersed in corruption scandals, which takes a repressive stance against collectives and organizations that freely exercise their freedom of speech in order to criticize various anti-people policies of the government. This is the government's response to social protest. And the FAG is not the first to be attacked - we must remember the murder of the landless peasant Elton Brum or the death of Marcelo Cavalcante last February. We condemn these acts of repression in the strongest terms. We denounce the incongruity of Brazilian government policy, a policy of the right with left-wing words. A policy that is governed by the economic parameters dictated by the multinationals and therefore their militaristic, repressive tactics. Not only do we reject this government repression, but we also express our solidarity and support for the comrades of the FAG, for the constant and tenacious work they do with the ordinary people of their city, which the government and police authorities are seeking to silence by terror, intimidation and repression. We are sure they will not succeed.
It is important now to show support and solidarity. For this reason, we appeal to all anarchist, libertarian and grassroots organizations and collectives to protest against this attack.

We learned a few hours ago of a civil police operation against an alleged group responsible for several attacks on police vehicles, a bank, car dealers, police stations and political party headquarters.
Rafael is a young poor Black man that until June 2013 used to work picking up material for recycling on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Downtown. He used to sleep on the streets and only sometimes go back home, in favela Vila Cruzeiro, so that he would save up the transportation money. However, on June 20th, his routine changed. Comrade Vicente, like other militants and fighters from other organisations, collectives and ideologies was not the first and will not be the last black and anarchist youth to be sentenced in this racist Brazil. Thousands of black and poor men and women are exterminated and condemned daily by the military police and the racist and bourgeois justice system. It is to them that our militant solidarity is and will be directed alongside every worker with whom we raise our fists. We will not be intimidated and in every street march, picket, strike and occupation we will be shoulder to shoulder with all those who struggle! [Português] [Français] We of the Federação Anarquista do Rio de Janeiro vehemently repudiate the latest acts of political persecution promoted by the Brazilian State in Rio de Janeiro. We wish to show our solidarity with the companions of the Frente Independente Popular, the Organização Anarquista Terra e Liberdade and all the many comrades (17 warrants) who woke up to calls from the Federal Police and the Civil Police, banging on their doors. [Português] On 1 October 2013, the Civil Police carried out an operation against militants and organizations campaigning in the Bloco de Lutas in Porto Alegre. The homes of PSOL and PSTU members, the Moinho Negro/Centro de Cultura Libertária da Azenha libertarian social centre, a dormitory of the MST (Landless Rural Workers' Movement), the premises of Via Campesina, an urban settlement of the Utopia e Luta autonomous movement and the public premises of the Federação Anarquista Gaúcha, the Ateneu Libertário Batalha de Várzea, were all raided by the police at the behest of the governor Genro (Workers' Party - PT) for the second time in less than four months. Moreover, the comrades of the Assentamento Madre Terra São Gabriel settlement in Rio Grande do Sul were manhandled by the Military Brigade at the headquarters of the settlement. [Português] The Workers' Party (PT - Partido dos Trabalhadores) government in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) is carrying out a witch hunt and raiding the homes and public premises of leftist organizations and social movements. On the afternoon of Tuesday 1 October 2013 the Ateneu Libertário A Batalha da Várzea, which is used for political and social purposes by the Federação Anarquista Gaúcha (FAG) was raided by the repressive forces of Tarso Genro's PT government for the second time. The door of the headquarters was broken down and the interior and equipment were overturned. On a table a note was left that read: "I came by and the door was open. I'd like to participate in the FAG". [Português] In Porto Alegre, on June 20 past, about 15 agents from the Civil Police raided the Ateneo Batalha da Varzea, political and social premises where the Gaucha Anarchist Federation is located, without a warrant. [Castellano] On Thursday afternoon (20/06/2013), preceding the already anticipated mass protest in the Gaucha capital, the forced entry invasion of the Ateneu Libertário A Batalha da Várzea took place, carried out by unidentified police agents. Owing to this, in the statement of Friday morning, June 21, we reported that the raid had been carried out by the Federal Police, after all this is how the agents of repression presented themselves. [Português] On the afternoon of Wednesday, 20 June 2013, between 12 and 15 plainclothes officers dressed in black waistcoats and blazers, claiming to be from the Federal Police broke into and raided the Ateneu Batalha da Várzea, the social and political premises of the Federação Anarquista Gaúcha, and took some of our material. The officers would not present any search and seizure warrant to standers-by who tried to find out what was happening. In addition to this, some officers, also in plainclothes, tried to take a comrade from her home this morning. Viemos através deste manifestar nossa solidariedade a Federação Anarquista Gaúcha em repúdio a invasão e apreensão de materiais e equipamentos de sua sede em Porto Alegre operada pela polícia civil na tarde de quinta-feira, 29 de outubro, e a abertura de processo criminal por injúria, calúnia e difamação a mando da governadora Yeda Crusius e expedido pelo Ministério Público Estadual. Este ato repressivo constitui cerceamento da liberdade de expressão e o direito de reunião resultando em censura política e intento de criminalização desta organização.
Já é notório para o Brasil e também em nível internacional a política de criminalização da pobreza e do protesto que é operada por este governo. Repressão e processos judiciais sobre o Movimento Sem Terra, categorias em greve, dirigentes sindicais e mobilizações populares que fazem oposição e denúncia aos esquemas de corrupção instalados nos altos escalões do governo e das políticas do Banco Mundial que desmontam com os serviços públicos e atacam direitos dos trabalhadores. A pobreza da periferia das grandes cidades também é alvo desta política truculenta.
Com esta carta queremos pesar as justas reivindicações de fim aos processos judiciais e a devolução de todos os bens apreendidos da FAG como a garantia das liberdades democráticas que foram violadas pelo Estado.

The police investigation has now ended, with the result that a total of 8 comrades have now been indicted for "criminal offence against the honour [of the governor, Crusius], incitement to commit a crime, and conspiracy or gang membership".
