Press release on the war in Libya Faced with the insurrection of the Libyan population in their attempt to put an end to several decades of dictatorship by the Qaddafi clan, the government has responded with increasingly violent armed repression. This repression forms part of the escalating repression of the various dictatorships in North Africa and in the Near and Middle East, seeking to put an end to the wave of popular revolts that started in Tunisia and Egypt. [Français] Libya: For the revolution, against the imperialist war!Faced with the insurrection of the Libyan population in their attempt to put an end to several decades of dictatorship by the Qaddafi clan, the government has responded with increasingly violent armed repression. This repression forms part of the escalating repression of the various dictatorships in North Africa and in the Near and Middle East, seeking to put an end to the wave of popular revolts that started in Tunisia and Egypt. In Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Libya, the State does not hesitate to shoot at demonstrators, at struggling workers, to drown in blood the people's aspirations for freedom. In the case of Libya, the military superiority of the Qaddafi clan over the insurrectionists was built up over the years through the sale of arms from the same States which are now justifying military intervention in the name of "support for democracy". The French State received Qaddafi with full honours in 2007 and companies like Dassault and Thalès signed juicy contracts that the Libyan people are today paying for with their lives. The European States sold more than €343 million's worth of weapons in 2009 to a Libyan government that was not only a business partner, but also a political partner, in its cooperation with the anti-immigration policies of the European States. Today, those who once happily traded with Qaddafi and his bloodthirsty system are on the point of bombarding Libya, while presenting themselves as saviours of the struggling Libyan people. The French State is entering the war together with other States and, as in all wars, it is the civilian populations who will suffer. In Libya like elsewhere, we greet the revolt of the popular classes and the population against autocracy, and their aspirations for freedom, as well as the dynamics of popular self-organization which are developing and which represent the best guarantee against repression and political takeovers.
We denounce at the same time the hypocrisy of those States who are trying to pass their attempt at imperialist takeover off as a "humane" intervention on the side of those in revolt. How can we believe that this is selfless "aid" to the Libyan insurgents when these self-same States continue, in the name of controlling oil resources, to openly support armed repression when it is carried out by their allies, as in Iraq, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and in Yemen. The examples of Iraq, Afghanistan and a good many other countries show us what we should think of this kind of talk, and at what point the claim "to be exporting democracy" merely masks the fact that the only interest of the bourgeoisie and the States is to maintain the capitalist system in order to preserve their power over the people.
Solidarity with those in revolt in Libya, in Iran, in Saudi Arabia, in Yemen, in Bahrain and elsewhere! |
