Injustice by the British justice system

A case that’s need highlighting is the case of Republican prisoner Willy Wong, he is held in Maghaberry Prison in Co Antrim. In March 2010 he was arrested along with another man and charged, eventually convicted of possession of a pipe bomb. He was sentenced very differently to the way Republican prisoners (and social prisoners) usually get sentenced. He was sentenced for an undetermined period, but after 5 years inprisoned it would be up to the Parole board when he is to be released.

Willy Wong was 22 when arrested, he is now 27 years old, he is still in jail. In March he was up on front of the Parole board, the board came to the conclusion that Willy Wong is not “eligible” for release. The board said they believe he was not “totally reformed” or had not “fully regretted his actions”.

He has served over 5 years in prison, he is pretty much left to the mersey of the British justice system. The sentence he was given is totally barbaric, the administration can put any conditions they want on him. Usually undetermined sentences are given to people sentence to life imprisonment, so Willy Wong’s case is out of the ordinary. The EU ruled against such sentence because of being cruel and inhumane.

But such measures are not of the ordinary for people that follow the Republicanism. There have been many many victims of the British justice system, the cases of the Gilford four and the Birmingham six are cases in point, although none were members of any Republican group their crime was for being Irish, they spent decades in prison. Another case more recently is the Craigavon two, their case is very suspicious and looks to be a stitch up, the only evidence the prosecution presented was either circumstantial or to be proven false.

These cases are not politic issues they are human rights issues.

textPrison Officers to walk away with 60 million in north as sectarian legacy continues in prisons 22:03 Fri 11 Nov by Sean Matthews 0 comments

The sixty million payoff to prison officers in Northern Ireland could be much better spent on addressing the causes of crime such as poverty, social deprivation and prison rehabilitation. Prison officers who served during the Troubles could walk away from their jobs with packages of more than £120,000 plus pension as part of a £60m redundancy programme aimed at ‘modernising’ the service.

As the economic crisis deepens in Ireland, brutal conditions worsen in it's already overcrowded prisons. Of course the incarcerated are almost exclusively from the poorest sections of society, and the real criminals who have brought economic blight upon the country will never see the inside of a cell or have to endure slopping out.

This year marks the ten year anniversary of the continuity RUC/PSNI with former Chief Constable Hugh Orde once referring to the force as the ‘most democratic, accountable police service in the world.’ However, despite the cosmetic changes and window dressing the reality on the ground for working class communities is in stark contrast to the propaganda media blitz waged by the status-quo.

textGarda Brutality in Ireland : Business As Usual Jul 22 by Shuana Maguire 0 comments

The so-called investigation into the death of Donegal man Richie Barron has turned out to be a cesspool of all that is rotten and corrupt about our police force; harassment, intimidation and attempts to frame the McBrearty family. Their punishment - a transfer to Dublin! What an insult to the people of both Donegal and Dublin.
