30 years Haringey Solidarity Group: A Celebration of 30 years of radical ideas On Wednesday The Barricade Inn Collective received court summons papers informing us that the following day (Thursday 22nd October) the estate holders of the building would be seeking an injunction against us. Court was adjourned and the case will be back in court next Wednesday (28th October). The Workers Solidarity Movement has decided to withdraw from the Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes. Please see statement below. We have made a donation of €1,000 towards paying off the debts of CAHWT.
With the full backing of the Glasgow chapter of Liberty and Solidarity and local community newspaper 'The Burgh Angel' , Hamiltonhill Action Group will be holding a demonstration with the Scottish Tenants Organisation on Thursday 24th September, against the Glasgow Housing Association's (GHA) refusal to invest money in their community.
We can contact other local groups wherever they are and make our campaign bigger and nationwide. We can win the price war. Nowadays, organising ourselves and creating campaigns are much easier than thirty years ago during the poll tax era. New technology and social media platforms have given us more opportunities to call and contact people, whilst providing more and better skills to plan and organise.
The outraged media reaction to a jury doing its job and finding the Jobstown defendants not guilty is quite extraordinary. Rather than do the right thing and launch an investigation as to how 180 cops could produce evidence that was directly contradicted by video evidence, the media have gone on a rant against Twitter! Rather than finding it suspicious that nearly 3 million in public funds was spent by the DPP on a case that any proper check of available evidence should have indicated was never likely to convince a jury, the media suggest instead that the problem lay in the exact charges brought. The trial was part of a large scale state operation to suppress a mass anti-austerity community campaign.
The occupation of Apollo House in Dublin was the largest direct action in Ireland in recent years, but it did not materialize out of nowhere.

A housing direct action is took place this morning at the Dublin City Council (DCC) office in Bunratty Civic Centre, Coolock in Dublin. Mother’s and their children who are in need of housing occupied the offices in order to force the council to answer their questions. In particular they want to know why many people are discovering there isn’t even emergency accommodation available. more >>

Spring zu Komment: 1 2 3 4 5I wonder why the WSM is now putting out a local newsletter. What's the difference with the paper? Can we see the first issue?
There is no big mystery, over a year ago the Dublin branch grew to a size where we split it into two branches and of these quite a few members of 1st of May live in and around the liberties. We've been distributing papers and leaflets there for years, expermenting with a local newsletter was an obvious step.

If you look around the site and our older ones you'll find other material as well eg

But still, I fail to see the real difference with WS. It's preatty similar actually in term of style and content. Usualy, groups end up with local newsletter when they have to say that is relevant localy but would not be relevant for a national audience. Or when they want to experiment with a different type of distribution. What do you hope to achieve with the libertarian that cannot be done with worker solidarity?
I'm just curious. When we started Cause commune we put an end to La Nuit (our local newsletter) because it was no longer relevant. Actually, our puting out Cause commune was partly due to arguments put forward by WSM members... So I'm wondering why a group would make the exact opposite decision.
The Cork WSM have done a number of local newsletters over the years. There's a lot of local stuff that goes on that is really only of concern to people in a particular area.
The Libertarian looks similar to the Workers Solidarity (Ireland) in layout and style - and perhaps that is not a good idea - but in principal it a great move to getting a more local production into a neighbourhood of Dublin 8.
Well done.
There are a number of significant differences between the two publications.
1. Workers Solidarity is around 4 times longer that the Libertarian allowing it to deal with more issues
2. WS is funded out of national WSM funds while the Libertarian is funded out of 1st of May branch funds. They are not competing for the same financial resources.
3. WS is edited by a group elected from National Conference, the Libertarian is edited by the 1st of May branch - in theory this allows it to respond quicker to events and to have a more local focus. In terms of 'advantages' this is the key difference.
I'd be very worried to replace our national paper (WS) with local ones but I don't see a problem with also having local publications where useful. (In case its not clear WS also gets distributed in this area, we are not distributing the Libertarian as an alternative to it).
