And you shall be named Praetorians... and you shall rule the cities.
"You are the Praetor Urbanus. Blessed by the Lord who gave me the command of a headquarter of such stars and a staff of such worthy individuals." Viron Polidoras, Minister of Public Order, Chief Commander of Praetorian Cohorts of Parliamentary Democracy
Greece: "And you shall be named Praetorians... and you shall rule the cities."
"You are the Praetor Urbanus. Blessed by the Lord who gave me the command of a headquarter of such stars and a staff of such worthy individuals."
Minister of Public Order,
Chief Commander of Praetorian Cohorts of Parliamentary Democracy
*** Praetor Urbanus, otherwise known as "Praetorians" or "Praetoriani" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praetorian_Guard " ) , were the elite urban guard of the Roman Empire. The actual meaning of the word is "the Leaders of the City".
That was just the first of a series of statements by the Greek Minister of Public Order, a couple of months ago. as usual noone gave any importance to his words as he is known to be an unstable and disturbed personality. Noone knew what he meant by renaming the Policemen into Praetorians.
There were reports about new methods and unthought brutallity of the Greek Police from last year, like this report after a student march in Athens:
"We are almost certain that the MAT (riot police) are in a process of acting independently, and this is proven by the big hatred and brutality during the student mobilisations. They had entrapped in the Law Department thousands of students, they have beaten especially female students and journalists who were photographing the brutality, they have thrown inside the building chemicals (not just CS but other kinds like mustard and neural gases), there were many unconscious and injured students and only by accident and because of the barricades there was not someone killed! We are certain that they lust for blood."
Then there were indications about extreme right wing cops who were controlling the police unions, but the government and the media spoke of isolated cases. These isolated cases seem to be the "stars" that Chief Polidoras is talking about. Check out this link:
This syndicalist cops, one of them is almost speaking every day on the TV news as representative of the police, have a webpage with the photograph of Papadopoulos, theMilitary General who was the leader of the Junta, and they write above the picture "OUR LEADER"! They have photos of Carlo Guliani in Genoa, saying that that's how job must be done. And a lot more such things (guns, immigrants treatment, etc). How is it possible the protectors of the so called democracy to believe in Junta...
Since September there was a wave of strikes of teachers and students who were dealt quickly by the police. There were cases of beatings, tortures, of policemen entering schools and asking the names of the strikers, of riot cops carrying steel punches to attack the protestors, of new types of cops without any indications (numbers on them) and wearing conventional cascets or hoods etc etc.
After all these Polidoras asked for a new law to pass which will prevent any "small marches" from taking place. Or if the marches are "medium size" will take place in one road lane. Whose going to say whicha re big marches or not? The Praetorians of course the same ones who worship the Dictator Papadopoulos, the same "stars" and "worthy individuals" who post photos of shot protestors and say that we shall be allowed to shoot!
Recently Chief commander Polidoras made a series of TV appearances were he explained in full detail the problem of "antiauthoritarian infestation in Greece" and that he will arrest all of them. Then we had the events of the 17th of November, the anniversary of the student riot against the Junta in 1973. the wave of police repression and state terrorism hit the two major cities of Greece (Athens and Thessaloniki). Check out these links about the events:
After the brutal repression the Chief Praetor made a public announcment, speaking towards the Praetorians, but in order for all society to listen:
"I speak to the commanders who planned the operations (on the 17th of November 2006), and to the simple officers who put the plans into practice:
The operation of pacifing the march was succesfull, CONGRATULATIONS!
I saw proffesionalism, I saw th right methods, p plans put into actions, I saw automatism and collectedness in the actions who brought success.
In all the subsections we need further improvement. We will conquer this.
For our democracy, for our society!
I congratulate you,
Viron G. Polidoras"
It seems that even if they send many to the court houses, the hospitals and the prison cells. They were unable to complete the sick visions of the Mister of Public Order. The answer to repression were marches all over Greece and direct actions:
So, the last week he came forward again with a new plan:
He explained the categories of anarchists that he wants to deal with and then he demanded from the parliamentary parties to make a statement of Public Denunciation of antiauthoritarians and anarchists. Then he asked that a conversation to take place in the parliament and all parties to give the OK for the go ahead of an operation to bring to justice all the anarchists and the antiauthoritarians.
And when the left party of Synaspismos said that we will not denounce anything, but we keep a distance from violent acts. The Polidoras stated on a radio station the Synaspisamos party is illegal (!) . The democracy that he is speaking about when he says "for our democracy" is the democracy who doesn't recognise the elections and the parliament??? Even neoliberal scums who speak of democracy cannot speak (at least on public) of their intentions of outlawing other parliamentary parties...
The PASOK party (socialists who were in govenrment for 20 years) does not say directly that they agree, as they want to keep the votes of the more openminded voters, but they stated that "we were more capable to deal with the anarchists when in 1995 we arrested 500 of them in one night". That's not politics but a show of head-hunters who race for who has more anarchist skulls on the walls of their suites.
The Communist party (stalinists) announced for one more time the same thing that they announced after the Polytechinc uprising on 17th of November 1973. That the antiauthoritarians are "provocators who cooperate with the police in order to give the governemnt an excuse to attack the working class"... no comment ...
But let's go back to our friend Viron... He stated that Synaspismos is illegal party that cooperates with anarchist/antiauthoritarian space (!) and that the anarchists and antiauthoritarians are children of the PASOK party (!) .
It is obvious even from this very brief report on the situation that the person is 100% an unstable and sick individual, BUT that does NOT mean that all these are his personal plans.
This does NOT mean that we have a vendeta with the cops. The cops are just tools and all this situation is in order to make the society believe that all the recent struggles are a case of vendeta. The stuggles in the education field and in working field are a social issue, a social fight. And the state is using the usual tactic of attacking the most militant parts. As always the state feels that when they start to lose the ongoing social war, they take off the democratic mask.
And of course let's remember that throughout history when a regime wanted to finish its opponents and crash the freedom of speech and thought under the Praetorian Boots, they always used an unstable person to do the dirty job that even the regime leaders couldn't do. For example the Nazi regime of Germany sent specific individuals to operate the concertation camps and the furnaces. This tactic allows a regime to throw the whole blaim on a few individuals in the "sad" case of failure.
The whole situation gets more complicated when you think the advanced interest of USA "secret" services on the struggles which take place in Greece:
Anyway we will keep you informed on the ongoing situation, and rest assured that - whatever the outcome - we 'll never fall without a stand.
Militant greetings from Greece!
