A dissident documentary from the Chinese Underground
Documentary "produced in 2005 by individuals in the Chinese underground". Cover human rights violations in four areas.
An (american) anarchist comrade and long-time
friend of mine who has spent the last 4 years in China working with
and coordinating international support for anti-authoritarian dissidants
there sent me the info for a new documentary produced at great personal
risk by members of the Chinese underground to oppose the dictatorship.
It's called Red Sun Setting, and she (and I) would appriciate it
greatly if you all would take the time to download it and forward
the information anywhere and everywhere appropriate.
I download and had a look. It's a limited take on whats happening in China focusing on the sort of thing even liberals can (rightly) get outraged by. The opening section on internet censorship is very interesting for documenting the resources being put into controlling the net but its really missing any material on working conditions in China and how the state repression is now part of global capitalism. The corporations directly involved in controlling the internet are mentioned but that the repression is required so that Walmart can buy cheap is not.
The quote from Churchill right at the end is a bit hard to take. Churchill was a nasty racist (who justified the RAF dropping gas bombs on Iraq in 1919) and a vicious anti-trade trade unionist. It's why his statue was singled out for abuse at the Mayday RTS in London in 2000.
I can understand the areas not covered in the first paragrah above if this is part of a wider project but the Churchill thing really sticks if this was produced by an anarchist.
I know the girl who produced this and i know she had a n issue with the churchill quote too, but some of the chinese dissidents she worked with picked that one.
I also know why theres not very much mention of the western corporations that helped the chinese government, and thats mainly because the video was orginally made for the chinese and not for the west, and putting too much emphasis on western corporations makes it easy to shift blame away from the chinese government who is inviting the western corporations to come in. It also reinforces state propagana to talk on and on about the west, because the chinese government has been saying that a lot of their problems are based in western influence anyway. Most of the people in china dont know this stuff is happening, and they dont have the privilege of liberal outrage.
The only reason the video is in english is because she made it available.
I think its brave what theyre doing because they could go to jail for at least 20 years in the chinese prisons or be shot. We should support this effort, especially in countries where they come down so hard on dissent.
I would really really like to see this video but the link is broken and I am unable to find it anywhere else... Please email me if you know anything. Thanks!
