Unfortunately, it is not only the parliamentary left in Ireland which is in crisis, but the bulk of the left. It is significant that this is the only country in the EU where austerity measures are taking place and not a single strike has been called to fight them (sure, like the ten thousand men of the Grand Old Duke of York we march up and down the hill once a year, on a Saturday so industry and commerce are not that upset).

The extra-parliamentary left (which includes the anarchists) has also been unable to come out with a sound strategy to fight austerity that can mobilise and organise the people.
Criticism is good. Self-criticism is even better. Fair comment ...http://www.anarkismo.net/article/24815#comment146622013-01-31T23:27:41+08:00KevinFair comment. I agree with much of what you say. True I haven’t written about it on this forum but I am sure that day will come too.
No strikes in Ireland? True and I accept the rap on the knuckles. It grieves me too. But I am of the view that Ireland was and remains a leading innovator in corporatist style social management. I am not trying to excuse the anarchist movement here or to jargonise a real issue – the lack of a fight back – but we went through two and a half decades of social peace on the labour front before any crash happened. How was such consensus possible? The corporatist mode of social management, pervasive here, has deep roots within the Irish experience. Does the anarchist movement here fully appreciate this? I don’t think so myself. But anarchist ideas are nonetheless very relevant now in particular if we are to avoid the many and varied culs-de-sac now being made avaiable to us – hence the article on Clare Daly.
