On Thursday, 24 February, in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, we attempted to carry out a demonstration in front of the Russian Embassy in Ankara as a response to the call for action made by anarchists in Ukraine. Even before the demonstration started, police have arrested all of our comrades, 6 in total. “Murderer state will pay!” and “State is war, war means massacre!” slogans shout during the arrest. The following statement was meant to read during the demonstration.

States are fighting, peoples are being massacred!

We are here today as a response to the call for action made by our anarchist comrades in Ukraine, to demonstrate in front of Russian Embassies around the world. We are here because today our brothers in Ukraine woke up with bombs.

Battle! Can we grasp what it means? Is there a worse word in our language than this? Do we think of photos of massacre, murder, looting, plunder and destruction? Do we hear the sounds of planes, missiles, bombs, and dozens of war instruments that have reached completely different stages in the 21st century? Can we see the battlefields full of corpses?

The geography of Ukraine, which is kilometers away from here, is being attacked by the Russian State today. But this occupation is not a new occupation for Ukraine. In Ukraine, people live under the occupation of states, as in the rest of the world. Today, the invader Russian State is waging war against the invader Ukrainian State. There are not only two sides of this war. The sides of this war are NATO, the USA, the EU and their affiliated states.

For us, Ukraine, NATO, the USA, the EU, Russia are equally invaders. Because these states and alliances are organized terrorist organizations founded on the lives of the peoples, fed by the labor of the peoples, and grown with the blood of the peoples. For decades, our lands, our lives, our future, our existence, our selves, our everything has been under the occupation of these terrorist organizations.

What is happening today is nothing but the duel of these terrorist organizations. These duels have occurred countless times in history. We saw this duel in World Wars. The same things happened in the geography we live in, in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, all over the world. The world's largest organized terrorist organizations have repeatedly clashed over the lives of peoples.

The thieves, who were too cowardly to fight, and therefore brought the youth of the world to the front to fight for themselves, killed millions of people over and over.

The same thing is happening today. The playground of those who are in an endless war with each other for their domination over the world, and this time it’s in Ukraine! The Ukrainian State, which supports the neo-Nazis who burned to death 48 people in the union building in Ukraine, the USA, which has carried out massacres in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and countless geographies, the EU, the gigantic terrorists of global capitalism, the organized terrorist organization that has equipped war bases all over the world. NATO, Russia, which has repeatedly turned Georgia, the Crimea, the Caucasus, and Central Asia into a war zone, and they have countless war tools. And the poor people's children, who were forcibly dragged to the front by them, and millions of people whose living space has been turned into a war zone!

The same organized crime groups have turned Syria into a war zone a few years ago. In the ongoing global civil war in Syria, Aleppo, Idlib, Kobane, Afrin, Raqqa, Serekaniye and many cities have been repeatedly occupied by these organized crime groups and gangs under their control. The war waged by these gigantic organized crime groups in Syria once again showed us that the only solution is a revolution by the people's self-organisation.

We saw a similar example in Ukraine at the beginning of the last century. The territory of Ukraine, which is being occupied by Russia today, was left to the German-Austrian Empires as a result of a world war treaty. Anarchists in Ukraine taught us what to do against war and occupation that day. To the armies of Germany and Austria, the remnant of Tsarist Russia to the White Army, the new power in Russia to the Red Army, the Ukrainian Nationalists to Petlyura; against all tyrants that are against the people by nature; they carried out a revolution by the self-organization of the people. Today, this is the only solution for the oppressed peoples in Ukraine and other parts of the world. We must organize freedom every day all over the world against states, each of which is a war machine, and increase the struggle against capitalism and the state.

Our Ukrainian anarchist comrades issued a statement today and said: “As anarchists, who understand more than anyone else the importance of freedom, we know that all forces must be gathered and organized to fight against dictators. Maybe at the moment our movement is weak and not prepared for military action. But he will be able to make a small contribution to tying the noose around the dictator's neck.” Today we salute our anarchist comrades who are fighting for freedom in Ukraine.

The invaders are not only in Ukraine but all over the world. They are the bloodsuckers who start the war, the bosses in our workplaces, the states in our lives, the capitalists who have invaded every part of the world. The oppressed peoples in all geographies of the world, who produce everything on earth, must refuse to produce the knife that rests on the throat of their brothers and fight for states that feed on the blood of peoples.

We stand with the oppressed peoples, against the war waged with the blood of our brothers, against NATO, the USA, the EU, the Ukrainian state and Russia!

This statement appeared in Russian on avtonom.org, a media project that grew out of the libertarian communist network Autonomous Action.

Yesterday, on February 21, an extraordinary meeting of the Russian Security Council was held. As part of this theatrical act, Putin forced his closest servants to publicly “ask” him to recognize the independence of the so-called “people’s republics” of the Luhansk People’s Republic [LPR] and Donetsk People’s Republic [DPR] in eastern Ukraine.

It is quite obvious that this is a step towards the further annexation of these territories by Russia—no matter how it is formalized (or not formalized) legally. In fact, the Kremlin ceases to consider the LPR and DPR part of Ukraine and finally makes them its protectorate. “First the recognition of independence, then annexation”: this sequence was already worked out in 2014 in Crimea. This is also clear from Naryshkin’s stupid reservations at the meeting of the Security Council (“Yes, I support the entry of these territories into the Russian Federation “).
1
Since the meeting, as it turned out, was broadcast on tape [rather than live], and these “reservations” were not cut out, but left in—the hint is clear.

In an “appeal to the people” that same evening, Putin seemed to “agree” with these requests and announced the recognition of the LPR and DPR as independent states. In fact, he said the following: “We are taking a piece of the Donbass, and if Ukraine rocks the boat, then let it blame itself, we don’t consider it a state at all, so we’ll take even more.” According to Putin’s decree, Russian troops are already entering the territory of the LPR and DPR. This is a clear gesture of threat towards the rest of Ukraine and especially towards the parts of the Lugansk and Donetsk regions still controlled by Ukraine. This is the actual occupation [in the sense that until now, Luhansk and Donetsk were only occupied by proxy].

We do not want to stand up for any states. We are anarchists and we are against any borders between nations. But we are against this annexation, because it only establishes new borders, and the decision on this is made solely by the authoritarian leader—Vladimir Putin. This is an act of imperialist aggression by Russia. We have no illusions about the Ukrainian state, but it is clear to us that it is not the main aggressor in this story—this is not a confrontation between two equal evils. First of all, this is an attempt by the Russian authoritarian government to solve its internal problems through a “small victorious war and the accumulation of lands” [a reference to Ivan III].

It is quite probable that the Kremlin regime will stage some kind of spectacle of a “referendum” on the annexed lands. Such performances already took place in the DPR and LPR in 2014, but not even Moscow recognized their results. Now, apparently, Putin has decided to change that. Of course, there can be no talk of any “free and secret voting” in these territories—they are under the control of militarized gangs completely dependent on Moscow. Those who were opposed to these gangs and against integration with Russia were either killed or forced to emigrate. Thus, any “referendum on the return of Donbass like a lost ship to its native harbor” will be a propaganda lie. The residents of Donbass will be able to formulate their decision only when the troops of all states—and first of all the Russian Federation—leave these territories.

The recognition and annexation of the DPR and LPR will not bring anything good to the inhabitants of Russia itself.

First, in any case, this will lead to the militarization of all spheres of life, even greater international isolation of Russia, sanctions and a decline in general well-being. Restoring the destroyed infrastructure and taking the “people’s republics” into the state budget will not be free, either—both will cost billions of rubles that could otherwise be spent on education and medicine. Have no doubt: the yachts of the Russian oligarchs will not become smaller, but everyone else will begin to live worse.

Second, the likely aggravation of the armed confrontation with Ukraine will mean more dead and wounded soldiers and civilians, more destroyed cities and villages, more blood. Even if this conflict does not escalate into a world war, Putin’s imperial fantasies are not worth a single life.

Third, this will mean the further spread of the so-called “Russian world”: a crazy combination of neoliberal oligarchy, rigid centralized power, and patriarchal imperial propaganda. This consequence is not as obvious as the rise in the price of sausages and the sanctions on smartphones—but in the long run, it is even more dangerous.

We urge you to counter the Kremlin’s aggression by any means you see fit. Against the seizure of territories under any pretext, against sending the Russian army to the Donbass, against militarization. And ultimately, against the war. Take to the streets, spread the word, talk to the people around you—you know what to do. Do not be silent. Take action. Even a small screw can jam the gears of a death machine.

Against all borders, against all empires, against all wars!

Both NATO and Russia must be opposed, and should war eventuate, our job is not to pick a side but to work to end the war as quickly as possible. Should war break out then the spectre of 1917 needs to be made a reality again. The best defence against imperialist wars will always be a powerful, militant working-class and the fear of revolution that brings.

In imperialist conflict our solidarity is with the working class: Discussing the Ukraine conflict

By Iswed Tiggjan

Imperialist tension has continued to rise in Eastern Europe as Russia and NATO appear determined to compete for hegemony in Ukraine. Despite assurances from the Ukrainian government that conflict is unlikely, western media has continuously beat the drums of war in order to ensure their citizens are primed for another proxy war should Russia decide to invade.

On paper Russia claims that its current posturing is due to security concerns, most pertinent being NATO’s continued drive to expand towards its borders. Of particular concern is the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO, with Putin appearing to desire a guarantee that such an event will not occur. Concurrently the US and other NATO countries are positioning themselves as the defenders of human rights and the capacity for countries to choose their own international diplomatic relations. On paper both positions could be taken as reasonable demands. To fully understand the situation however we have to look a little closer at the reality of imperialist relations.

Since the fall of the Berlin wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO has sought to expand its reach throughout Eastern Europe serving to threaten and isolate Russia in an endeavour to stop it from being capable of again asserting itself as a global superpower capable of threatening Washington’s strength.

To quote from our British comrades in the Anarchist Communist Group (ACG):

“With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, a number of republics emerged that had separated from the Russian Federation. Among these was Ukraine, the largest in terms of landmass and the most important in terms of industrial development, an industrial development that had reached its climax under Stalin and his successors.

The fall of the Soviet Union seriously weakened Russia but thanks to rising oil prices coupled with the rise to power of Putin, it began to re-assert itself. It was determined to control and influence the surrounding countries on its borders, both for defence reasons and to re-affirm its control over those regions which it had established after World War Two.

The political-military alliance it had established with its satellites, the Warsaw Pact, was dissolved. However, the corresponding political-military alliance developed by the United States and the Western European powers, NATO, was not wound up and remains an instrument of both the USA and various component Western countries. In fact, NATO sought to increase its influence and has intervened in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Libya. Despite promising the Russian regime that it would not expand its influence east of what was East Germany, it has invested its forces in the countries surrounding Russia, including the Baltic States.

NATO is an aggressive military machine, not a body there to passively defend the West. It has intervened in Libya, in Afghanistan and Iraq. It actively seeks to recruit not just former Soviet republics like Ukraine and Georgia into its alliance, but also so called neutral countries like Finland and Sweden, both very close to Russia. It demands that each component country of NATO spends at least 2% of its Gross Domestic Product on military expenditure.”

Here we can see that the interest of NATO in Ukraine is far from humanitarian and has everything to do with defending western hegemony against rising rival imperialist powers. But how do we understand Russia’s actions?

Here we can again benefit from the work of our comrades in the ACG:

“The Putin regime is massing large numbers of troops on Ukraine’s borders for a number of reasons. The domestic situation is far from healthy and the Covid pandemic has aggravated this. Putin is wary of growing discontent and hopes that his belligerent attitude will unite the Russian masses behind him and make them forget their economic woes. This is a gamble, as the Russian masses are in general not keen to engage in warfare with their fellow Slavs in Ukraine, and remember the disastrous consequences of the war in Afghanistan, when Russian troops sent in to save the pro-Russian regime there were bogged down for years with massive casualties.”

It remains likely that neither NATO nor Russia truly want to escalate the current tensions into a full-blown war. To an extent both sides have already gained what they wanted from the conflict. Biden has taken full advantage of the opportunity to increase NATO troop presence in Eastern Europe, and will surely use this to pressure US aligned nations for further militarisation. For Russia this is a significant step in their road to regaining the global reach of the Soviet Union. Now Russia can claim to have not only outplayed the US in the Syrian proxy war, but to have stood toe-to-toe with the US empire without blinking, drawing a clear line in the sand. Russia has further made clear to the west it’s confidence in it’s developing military might, and it’s willingness to use it. However while neither side desires the conflict to escalate, the reality is that during heightened imperialist posturing war can often be sparked through a single mistake or miscalculation on either side, regardless of intentions.

For their part Ukrainian anarchists from the magazine Assembly remain skeptical of the West’s predictions of war stating that

“It may surprise you, but we know almost no one here who is interested in such news, and even fewer who take it seriously. For the most part, people are worried about exorbitant energy bills that are leading to more and more houses having their heating switched off, and enterprises to working or going into the shadow sector precarising their workers. Ukrainian gas is mostly exported to Europe, while energy carriers for power plants are bought from Russia and the occupied part of Donbass. So you can imagine why we would be skeptical about these horror forecasts from the Western press”

Assembly goes on to point out that the greatest deterrent to state powers falling into a new large-scale war is the threat that such a war holds to the entire capitalist order.

“…before 1917 [that is the Russian Revolution] there was 1914, when all of Europe thought that a small victorious war would last a couple of weeks, only to result in a world-revolutionary wave ending in 1923. With this in mind, we can see why the imperialist politicians and corporations are wary all the more that a military clash in the very centre of Europe will again lead to a comparable social explosion in their countries (at least in the USA — taking into account the rise of revolutionary struggle there during the last years). So the world leaders intend to divide spheres of influence peacefully and rattle their weapons just to facilitate their negotiations.”

While we agree with our Ukrainian comrades in their belief that the memory of the First World War and the workers’ revolutions it created remains a powerful deterrent, many governments also remember the capacity for war to build their short-term popularity and support, particularly when the capitalist order sees little threat of a revolutionary working class on the horizon. The First World War at the end of the day was the inevitable result of dividing “spheres of influence peacefully” having reached its limit.

If war does break out the outcome would be devastating for the Ukrainian and Russian people, and potentially the entire planet should NATO decide to intervene in a manner larger than the proxy wars of the past 30 years. Even should war be avoided in this conflict, the weakening of US hegemony and the rise of competing (proto)imperialist blocs in China and Russia means that the prospect of a large-scale imperialist war is now increasingly on the horizon. In such a situation it would be essential to avoid the trap of campism in which one side is chosen as being deserving of support. Our solidarity can never be with states engaging in war to serve their interests and the interests of their capitalist classes. Our solidarity can only ever go to the workers of every country across the globe.
