Με την ελπίδα να τους εγκαλέσουμε: Up against the wall motherfuckerς!

“Up against the wall motherfucker!”

Σε αυτό το άρθρο θα ασχοληθούμε με την ντανταιστική, κιαταστασιακή, Αναρχική ομάδα συγγένειας τους Up Against the Wall Motherfucker, που δραστηριοποιήθηκε στο στο Lower East Side της Νέας Υόρκης.

Το 1968 η ομάδα αλλάζει όνομα από Black Mask σε Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers και δρα υπόγεια στην παρανομία.

«…you can’t steal nothin’ from a white man, he’s already stole it, he owes you anything you want, even his life. All the stores will open if you just say the magic words. The magic words are, “Up against the wall mother fucker this is a stick up!”»

Ο Μαρκ Ραντ, ηγέτης στο SDS (Φοιτητές για μια Δημοκρατική Κοινωνία), στην ανοιχτή επιστολή του προς τον πρόεδρο της Κολούμπια Γκρέισον Κερκ ανακοίνωσε: «Θα χρησιμοποιήσω τα λόγια του Λερόι Τζόουνς (πραγματικό όνομα του Amiri Baraka) , τον οποίο είμαι σίγουρος ότι δεν σας αρέσει: «‘Up against the wall motherfucker, this is a stick-up!»

Η έκφραση πήρε ακόμα μεγαλύτερη δημοσιότητα όταν οι «David Peel and the Lower Eastside Band» λίγο μετά την καταστολή της κατάληψης ηχογράφησαν μια δημόσια ζωντανή συναυλία τους η οποία έγινε το ιστορικό άλμπουμ «Have A Marijuana» το οποίο υπήρξε αγαπημένο στην νεολαία και απεχθές στους γονείς τους το καλοκαίρι του ’68. Το δεύτερο τραγούδι αυτού του άλμπουμ εκτός από τα υπόλοιπα αντιμπατσικά μυνήματα έχει τίτλο «Up against the wall motherfucker».

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtcKEId6YEA

Οι Jefferson Airplane στο τραγούδι τους «we can be together” ‘έναν ύμνο για την επανάσταση, την αντικουλτούρα, ένα φιλοαναρχικό τραγούδι αναφέρουν στους στίχους του αυτή την έκφραση:

We can be together
Ah, you and me
We should be together
We are all outlaws in the eyes of America
In order to survive we steal cheat lie forge fred hide and deal
We are obscene lawless hideous dangerous dirty violent and young
But we should be together
Come on all you people standing around
Our life’s too fine to let it die and
We can be together
All your private property is
Target for your enemy
And your enemy is
We
We are forces of chaos and anarchy
Everything they say we are we are
And we are very
Proud of ourselves
Up against the wall
Up against the wall motherfucker
Tear down the walls
Tear down the walls
Come on now together
Get it on together
Everybody together
We should be together
We should be together my friends
We can be together
We will be
We must begin here and now
A new continent of earth and fire
Come on now gettin’ higher and higher
Tear down the walls
Tear down the walls
Tear down the walls
Won’t you try

A review of an anthology of essays about contemporary fascism in USA.

Why We Fight: Essays on Fascism, Resistance, and Surviving the Apocalypse
Shane Burley (Author); Natasha Lennard (Foreword)

Binding: pb
Pages: 340
Released: April 13, 2021
ISBN-13: 9781849354066

Fascism is a slippery concept. Academics have spent decades trying to pin it down and no individual has defined it adequately. Thats nobody’s fault. Self-identified fascists have existed as a movement for slightly over a century, which isn’t long in political terms. In addition and ironically for a totalitarian ideology, it had dissparate sources during its formative period. This has lead to various factions, internal tensions and contradictory impulses. It is both reactionary and modern, pro-technology and primitivist, religious and pagan, pro-capitalist and rhetorically anti-capitalist, etc. This eclecticism adds to the difficulty of definitional analysis for opponents. Likewise its consequent adaptability has allowed it to survive. Even its conclusive defeat in a World War never managed to entirely innoculate the world from fascism as a social plague.

Due to its internal ideological instability and myriad forms of organisation, any survey of fascism’s current manifestations must be broad. Shane Burley has written a collection of essays that meets this criterion. He looks at many aspects of it. This survey goes from its instrumental use of violence, types of parties and movements, gender attitudes, cultural propaganda related to book publishing and music, the role of anti-semitism, to a lot more.

His geographical area of focus is the USA. This could allow somebody elsewhere to avoid dealing with the phenomena he discusses. It might be convenient to build a mental wall around Trumpist Amerikkka and say “Yeah, that’s a problem for them, but nothing to do with me”. Burley shows awareness of and makes enough scattered references to movements and events elsewhere, including Europe, India, Aotearoa, and of course on the internet, to avoid that isolationist urge. In another irony, the ubiquity of people claiming particularism for themselves, means the rest of us have no excuses. We have to deal with this, no matter where we are.

In his introduction, Burley outlines what he sees as the unifying thread of his essays, some previously published, some new to this collection. That commonality is “…that they attempt to stay in the moment we are living through and they feel what it means to fight like we have no choice” (p. 33). This sense of desperate self-defence by those of us seeking equality, genuine democracy and freedom is seen by Shane as a reaction to a deeply American tradition of imminent apocalyptic doom that has been ramped up even more lately. He says “The U.S. was founded by fundamentalist fanatics” (p. 8) and “The U.S. has always been obssessed with the coming apocalypse” (p.7). This foundation has been added to by an accelerationist trend on the Right that wants to speed up the decline of the status quo in favour of their dystopian agenda. Add to this the idea that “The dominant feature of the far-right in the Trump era is not the uniformity of ideology…but its commitment to the propaganda of the attack” (p.13) and in literal, physical attacks on opponents. Its a powerful poison.

So with things going so badly, are we, as an academic might phrase it, all just fucked? Should we give up? Its a dangerous trap to fall into and understandable if you become too immersed in looking solely at the Rightist response to contemporary decay. However, the author highlights counter trends based on basic mutual aid. As he expresses it “The future of our survival depends on our ability to come together in community and social bonds, and in doing so we will undermine the entire complex that is crumbling around us” (p.34). So, unlike a liberal response that might either deny things are that bad or posits a solution based around maintaining their own position in the status quo, the writer buys into the apocalyptic scenario, while offering a radically divergent answer to that of the Right. He is also, not silly enough to promise ultimate victory in this struggle. By offering his essays, he does provide an understanding of our opponents and that is an important starting point in combatting them and possibly beating them.

The 17 chapters that make up the anthology vary in length. Some are no more than 3-4 pages but it would be a mistake to dismiss them on that basis. For example, an early chapter argues convincingly that law suits may have some positive effect as an anti-fascist tactic. They have been used against the Klan, Aryan Nations and others, but are insufficient. The reliance of the tactic upon the temporary intervention of an outside expert only gives short term benefits since they dont align with “…real grassroots community engagement” (p. 52). This is a valuable insight for those tempted to stick within the establishment-based approach to anti-fascism. Another ultra-short piece later in the book looks at the strange practice of white people dressing in ‘blackface’. Burley frames this around a series of personal anecdotes encountering acquaintances painting themselves black. None of those involved in the behaviour were fascist in any explicit sense. However, his account addresses a behaviour that normalises fascist and racist discourse and actions through a spurious ‘post-racial’ irony. It provides a breeding ground for the fully blown varieties to thrive. Its inclusion as a topic is testament to the writer’s value in looking at the broadness of the book’s subject.

Among the many substantial chapters in this collection, there are a few that stand out. One is on the issue of Anti-Semitism. Although some may feel Islamophobia has supersceded hatred of Jews as a motivation on the Right, Shane Burley reminds us that it is still a key feature of their ideology. As he says “Antisemitism is an archetype that truly motivates people: always present if rarely discussed” (p.226).He opens the piece with an incident when a Nazi flag was unfurled during a Bernie Sanders rally. There follows a detailed look at Anti-Semitism informed by a close familiarity with its advocates and their views. This includes the likes of contemporaries such as Kevin MacDonald, to earlier and more esoteric adherents such as Savitri Devi, Julius Evola and Miguel Serrano. He also touches on common themes such as Jews being linked to a nebulous concept of ‘modernity’ and its perceived problems and how the elasticity of that concept, has kept anti-semitism alive. Its worth noting that he also does not shy away from looking at the issue as it related to Corbyn’s Labour Party in the UK. Arguments and debates have been made around this latter point. Regardless of which side you finally fall upon in that discussion, what is more important is that the fascists don’t possess a monopoly on the problem. It shows that this is a social affliction that nobody should be complacent about.

Can Anti-Semitism be defeated? Shane correctly emphasises the faulty nature of the possibility offered by liberals. It is faulty because it is based on a kind of condescending logic. People believe this crap because they are ignorant, so if you just throw enough (presumably liberal?) education at them, the problem will evaporate.Their perspective fails to appreciate that “…antisemitism is, fundamentally, about the revolt against logic” (p.255) it is a standpoint ultimately rooted in emotion rather than rationality. Fascist anti-semites don’t especially value a materially anchored logic or rationality. They stress a mythos of emotional commitment to concepts such as ‘blood and soil’ and a-historical nordic or ‘aryan’ legends etc. In truth, the writer doesn’t offer an explicit in-depth alternative to the liberal prescription here. This is honest. To attempt more in a short text just wouldn’t do the subject justice. Some possibilities can be teased out implicitly or by contrast here and there but his purpose is more to inform us of the problem itself and lead the reader to begin a thought process on the question for herself.

Other chapters particularly worth checking out include one in which the essayist looks at the violence perpetrated by fascists and argues that it is an essential component of their ideology and another examining via gonzo style journalism, the femicidal and misogynistic tendencies among fascists who identify as men.

Burley opens his chapter on violence with a succinct declaration that even the normative functioning of the liberal consensus is structurally violent but in the case of the fascists, this is openly flaunted and hyped as an expression of identity. It is baked into their Manichean ‘winners versus losers’ view of the world, of how things are and should be. He then outlines a sad chronology of incidents from the Greensboro Massacre in 1979, the Oaklahoma Bombing of 1995, to Charlottesville in 2017, Christchurch, Kenosha and beyond. Regardless of their particular form of fascism from the KKK, Nazis such as the Atomwaffen Division, non-affiliated fascist individuals and the suit and tie thugs of the Alt Right, violence fuels their actions. It is always there. Again, this catalogue of activities could lead to dispair, but he notes that the fascists exist in a dialectical exchange with the liberatory forces of anti-fascism. The latter are “…the kernel of a new plurality defined compassion, mutual aid, and the willingness to disrupt the systems that never served us” (p. 208).

The piece on the fascist conception of masculinity is one in which the author delves into the dark world of mens’ groups centered on tribalist neo-pagan mythologies. It is a depressing sub-culture where excessive testosterone, brutal misogyny, the advocacy of inequality, violence as an intrinsic signifier and a twisted self-help philosophy intertwine. Shane’s experiences and investigations into this swamp are among the rawest and most personal in the collection. He talks about his relationship with his father and reflects on their relationship. He also details conversations with the heavy-hitters (literally and figuratively) of the movement he studies. Further details of this are best left to the reader to grapple with. Suffice it to say, it is well worth a look.

To conclude, Shane Burley’s volume is an important anthology of essays on a sadly, highly relevant topic. He casts an insightful eye on a comprehensive range of fascist activity, from its superstructural manifestations through to its physical insertions into the contemporary zeitgeist. Many of the subjects he covers are unpleasant. However, he makes a strong case that Fascism’s universal and ongoing threat to values of equality and freedom, mean this unpleasantness has to be faced squarely. Not just that, it has to be robustly opposed and done so contingently, without a false IOU that engagement will necessarily result in success. In the end, it will be up to all of us.

Two Distant Strangers (2020) is a well-made, Oscar-winning short film. It follows a sequence of events in the life and deaths of Carter (Joey Bada$$), a young black man in today’s New York. Yes, ‘deaths’ in the plural. The structure of the movie is similar to the time loop of ‘Groundhog Day’ (1993). Carter repetitively leaves the apartment of Perri (Zaria Simone) a one-night stand, only to be shot soon after by a white cop (Andrew Howard). Despite multiple attempts to alter the outcome through changing his own actions, Carter’s fate is repeatedly confirmed. It ends by not ending. The main character descends stairs once again, resolving to find a way to eventually get out of his predicament.

The film’s lack of closure provides a launching pad for debate and hopefully sustained action about the issues it raises. Is there meaningful free will? Is it possible for individual action to alter a systemic problem? Is moral transformation by an opponent possible? What factors cause racism? Should the movie really be called ‘Too Distant Strangers?’ Should the police be defunded? What does that mean and is it enough? etc.

The short-film format and the populating of the piece with a small number of unknown actors keep the focus squarely on such questions. Every frame from the effective establishing shots (in both senses of ‘shots’) is used to service the story. The pacing is taut, with just the right balance of character backgrounding. In this regard, the choice of Carter being a clever, articulate, financially stable professional rather than coming from the projects is an interesting one. It provides an important reminder that none of those things will save you if you’re a young black man in the USA. The narrative drive is well-paced, alternating with slow (relative to a half-hour timeframe of course) scenes and sudden bursts of kinetic energy. There are some very cleverly worked in allusions such as a spoken one related to George Floyd and visual ones such as a bloodstain in the shape of Africa and a police license plate 1488, but these are passing notes used to visually support the rest of the plot. There’s a lot going on and it’s all well done.

Sadly this story is as relevant now as it was 400 years ago. Watch it, and watch it and watch it and…

O Abbie, o Billy και η κατάλυση του corpus anarchi!

The following statement was released by the Melbourne Anarchist Communist Group on 10 January 2021.

THE TRUMP PUTSCH

It is important to call the events of Tuesday 6 January in Washington DC in the US by their proper name. It was an attempted Fascist putsch, consciously incited though not directed by Donald Trump. It was an attempt to prevent the US Congress taking the final step to authorise the inauguration of Joe Biden as President a fortnight later. It failed and we’re glad it did.

Capitalist media organisations are notoriously unreliable at estimating numbers at political events, but it’s clear that at least tens of thousands of Trump supporters attended a demonstration in Washington under Fascist leadership. Up to a couple of thousand people, including organised Fascist groups and known Fascist identities, stormed the Capitol building (the US Parliament House). The mob included not a few off-duty cops who were seen flashing their IDs to the Capitol Police on the way in. The rioters disrupted the proceedings, which were a certification of the results of the Electoral College, and took over the meeting chambers and many other areas of the building. Photographs have emerged from inside showing men in combat gear, carrying weapons and zip ties for handling prisoners. Eventually, the rioters were forced to leave. Congress resumed its session and recognised the result of the Electoral College.

Police treatment of the Washington event was remarkably light, especially considering that Fascists had been threatening for weeks to storm the Capitol and that Black Lives Matter protestors have been met with overwhelming and aggressive police violence. Leftist demonstrators would never have been given the opportunity to reach the steps, let alone breach the doors and break windows. Instead, several cops posed for selfies with members of the mob. At a later point, a woman Trump supporter was shot dead by Capitol Police. Three other Trump supporters died from “medical emergencies” (only one of which occurred inside the Capitol) and a cop died the next day.

Trump incited his Fascist followers to storm the Capitol as a last ditch attempt to prevent Biden’s inauguration, following the refusal of Mike Pence (Trump’s Vice President) to prevent it by acting in his role of presiding over the Senate. This was after a series of attempts by Trump to frustrate the inauguration of Biden. He called rallies of his supporters outside counting centres; launched dozens of court cases, losing on all but a handful of minor procedural points; and tried to heavy various State governors and officials involved in the election process. His phone call to the Georgia Secretary of State was recorded and released on the Internet and showed just how desperate Trump was becoming.

The Trump putsch, if it had been successful, would have transformed the United States into a Fascist dictatorship. Trump’s private army would have swept away the legislative branch of government. To make it stick, he would have been compelled to sack and/or arrest thousands of public officials – including, possibly, judges. But to carry through a putsch in defiance of a democratic election, it’s necessary to have plenty of friends in high places. Trump found he didn’t have nearly enough friends. He was beaten by the Deep State.

The failure of the putsch is a major blow to Trump. He has forced many Republican politicians, including the Vice President, to break with him. Most of the rest of the country is enraged. He has now been forced to promise a peaceful transfer of power on 20 January. This is both an admission of defeat and a concession that his conduct until now has contained an implicit threat of a coup.

There is no precise analogy from well-known history, but the closest one is Adolf Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch of 1923. A relatively small group of people attempted, with daring action, to deliver the government of Germany into the hands of a dictator. The failure of the putsch was a setback for the Nazis, but the Weimar Republic treated the putschists with kid gloves. Hitler was sentenced to only five years prison and was released after nine months. Worse, successive Weimar governments eroded democratic rights with frequent states of emergency and left Germany’s social problems unresolved. Hitler was able to rebuild his political credibility and then capitalise on the crisis created by the Depression. And we all know what followed that.

The Beer Hall Putsch analogy contains a lesson. Trump has given his enemies an opportunity to put him out of business, but the Democrats won’t follow through. The Fascists who stormed the Capitol building are being denounced by everyone, including Trump, and will probably be hung out to dry, but the consequences for Trump himself won’t be anywhere near hard enough. And the way Biden governs will, in due course, rehabilitate Trump. Left to their own devices, the Democrats will pave the way for the revival of Trump’s political fortunes.

Democrats will make their own assaults on democratic rights. Already, Biden has called the people who stormed the Capitol “domestic terrorists” and Democrats across the board have picked up on his cue. In using this term, Biden isn’t referring to the pipe bombs and the truck full of Molotov cocktails found in Washington, which have hardly got a mention in the mainstream media. He also wasn’t speaking about the death of a cop, which occurred after his statement. The “terrorism” he was denouncing was what was on everyone’s TV screens – a mob breaking windows, occupying the Capitol and disrupting a sitting of Congress.

Biden knows what he is doing. By denouncing Trump’s foot soldiers as terrorists, he is preparing for a broader crackdown on political activity outside accepted political channels. Any new laws or police powers will apply as much to the Left as to the Right. They will be used by the cops with glee against the Left and not at all or hardly ever against the Right. And Democrats denouncing (with equal parts ignorance and malice) the rioters in the Capitol as “anarchists” will have real consequences for actual Anarchists.

Lessons

The first lesson to be drawn is that the US bourgeoisie have not given up on capitalist democracy. It is their preferred form of rule, since there are too many capitalists to fit inside a single palace. While the capitalists are prepared to abandon democracy if it is necessary to preserve their power, they fear that a dictator would rule in the interests of one faction of capital rather than the capitalist class as a whole.

Secondly, there is nothing surprising about the events in Washington. Not the Fascist mobs. Not Trump’s incitement. Not the complicit approach of the cops. Not the failure of the putsch. Not the Democrats’ turn to “law and order”. And not the liberals’ surprise at all of these things except the last.

The Democrats will handle the aftermath of the putsch in a way that will strengthen the Right. They will pass yet more repressive laws. They will wax lyrical about the precious institutions of capitalist democracy and vehemently denounce the invaders of Congress. But when it comes to prosecuting and sentencing, many of these invaders will get kid glove treatment.

Finally, we need to realise that liberals are not our friends. They are not quietly on our side while we do the dangerous stuff. When push comes to shove, liberals want the heavy hand of the State to suppress Right wing dissent. They do not support working class counter-mobilisation. When the workers of the United States make a revolution, they will disperse the liberals’ precious Congress – themselves – not to establish a dictatorship, but to allow the mass organs of workers’ democracy to take power. And they will need to be prepared to defend themselves against a last-ditch violent reaction by the old regime, supported whole-heartedly by the liberals.

Next

For the time being, Trump is badly wounded and the Republican Party is deeply divided. The Fascists are demoralised because Trump is dumping on them to save his own skin. The Democrats are angry and also feel vindicated.

Anarchists in the United States need to ensure that the organisers of the Trump Putsch are clearly identified as Fascists for the world to see. Anarchists need to seize the opportunity to break the links that have been developing between them and the mainstream Right and calling the Fascists by their true name is an essential part of that. And Anarchists need to run hard against the Democrats’ agenda of righteous “law and order” and neo-liberalism. Biden was always going to be a bad President. The Trump Putsch means he’ll be worse.
