Derrick Jensen represents the current peak synthesis of primitivist and insurrectionist thought. And while both trends are declining within anarchism thanks to the global upswing of mass struggle against austerity, like in Egypt, Wisconsin, Spain, and so on, such trends are still able to get a good event together in Minneapolis, like the hundred or so people who attended the showing of END: CIV, a movie inspired by Jensen’s writing, and like it, a dead end for any relevant conversation on the present moment. read full story / add a comment

Across South America there is a growing movement – assuming different forms and characteristics, but with similar origins, demands and objectives – that, despite it being located at a strategically important intersection between two critical social issues – class struggle and ecology – seems to me to have received little attention in South African academic and activist circles. And this is true despite the fact that the social and economic conditions that gave rise to this movement prevail in South Africa, as they did – and continue to – in many South American countries. Perhaps this is due to the fact that this movement concerns people largely marginalised by industrial society and so-called ‘brown’ ecological issues – such as the pollution and contamination of rivers and dams surrounding poor communities, most acutely effecting the workers and poor – as opposed to the much more sanitary ‘green’ ecological issues – such as conservation and animal welfare – often associated, in South Africa at least, with liberal white activists from the middle and upper classes [1]. This is the movement of the catadores, as they are known in Brazil, and clasificadores in Uruguay; the recyclable waste pickers and sorters who, similarly to South Africa, constitute a growing informal sector in the industrial production cycle. This includes all people – not formally employed by public or private waste management services – who collect, transport, classify and sell recyclable waste for a living – or ‘work with scrap’ – thus “reducing demand for natural resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions” [2]. A category of work which, according to the World Bank, is performed by 15 million people globally – or one percent of the world population [3] – and has become increasingly common in South Africa in recent years. read full story / add a comment

Climate change is one of the main issues facing the world at this moment. We all know that when things go wrong, like when there is an earthquake or a flood, or a drought, poor people are most vulnerable. And usually the response to these disasters is a second disaster for poor people. For instance in Sri Lanka the so-called ‘development’ after the Tsunami forcibly removed fisherfolk from their coastal land to give it to developers to build hotels. Sometimes the attempts to prevent disaster are also a disaster for the poor. In South Africa when it is acknowledged that we as a country are using too much electricity it is not the big companies or the rich that have the police and the security guards kick down their doors to disconnect them. In some other countries in Africa poor rural people are being forced off their land so that it can be used for bio-fuels. Maybe this will slow down climate change but why must it be the poor people in Africa that must pay the price for this? They are not the ones that caused the problem. The ones that caused this problem are the rich, especially in America and in Europe. read full story / add a comment

Ακόμη και σήμερα κυριαρχεί η γνώμη ότι τα ζητήματα που εγείρει η ανάπτυξη της τεχνοεπιστήμης αφορούν τους ειδικούς επιστήμονες. Θεωρούμε λοιπόν, πολύ σημαντικό να ανοίξει η συζήτηση πέρα από τους χώρους της επιστημονικής εξειδίκευσης. La salud del río Tehuantepec está en riesgo. La vena que irriga la sangre de nuestra madre tierra se enferma y con ella nos enfermamos plantas, animales y los hombres que por siglos hemos vivido en armonía con el río Tehuantepec.

Queremos mostrar nuestra preocupación por la salud de nuestro río grande (Tehuantepec) y sus afluentes (La Virgen, Quiechapa, Lachiriega, Huitihuini, Recibimiento, Limón, Narro, etc). Queremos escuchar de otros pueblos la palabra de apoyo para proteger nuestro medio ambiente, así como compartir nuestras riquezas culturales en un ambiente de fiesta.

Es por ello que los invitamos al Primer foro Cultural que se realizará el Sábado 11 de junio del 2011 en la comunidad de Nejapa de Madero.
