Mid-December saw the eventual publication of the long-threatened household tax legislation. The first three months of 2012 will present every household in Ireland with a choice: whether to succumb to this new home tax, which along with the proposed water tax will rise to approx €1,200 per annum within a couple of years, or to refuse to register, refuse to pay and make a stand against the costs of bailing out bankers and developers continuing to be hoisted on our shoulders. read full story / add a comment

If the recent budget highlighted anything, it was the fact that the working class in Ireland is under severe attack. Services, too numerous to mention here, are being cut or removed entirely, while the real living standards of many of us are being driven down and down. Meanwhile the banker-thieves and investment-gamblers still live the highlife. read full story / add a comment

Derry was in the section of Ireland claimed by the British state and the shootings happened in the context of the suppression of a growing civil rights movement demanding equality for Catholics in the 6 of Ulster’s counties claimed by Britain. This year marks the ten year anniversary of the continuity RUC/PSNI with former Chief Constable Hugh Orde once referring to the force as the ‘most democratic, accountable police service in the world.’ However, despite the cosmetic changes and window dressing the reality on the ground for working class communities is in stark contrast to the propaganda media blitz waged by the status-quo. read full story / add a comment

2012 is rapidly approaching and with it comes the Olympic Games in Britain. Many people might be wondering what issue anarchists could possibly have with the idea of teams of young people who have trained for years and poured their hearts and souls into the chance to show off the athletic achievements of humanity and their local communities. If we fail to explain our reasons behind our opposition then we risk being misrepresented as an enemy to sports, or to the achievements of young people, or even as just the mythical rent-a-mob which just hates everything. read full story / add a comment

Over twenty thousand students demonstrated in Dublin today against the introduction of student fees and the cutting of student grants. The main demonstration organised by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI)also included a Free Education for Everyone (FEE) bloc comprised of rank & file students in disagreement with the passive lobbying tactics of the USI leadership. USI stewards formed a line with Garda to prevent FEE rejoining the demonstration after they led a breakway protest at Fine Gael HQ.

Anyone who has been active on the left and broader labour movement will have faced the 'million dollar question from republicans on the 'national question'. The question of opposition or indifference to the partition of the island is often thrown by republicans like a dagger in the direction of the existing left. In responnse many become either wedded to the romantic idea of the flag removing all our sins or face the jibe of being a ‘gas and water socialist’ or at worst a sop to unionism. It’s the type of choice you get at Stormont every four years where you get to choose between Coca Cola and Pepsi. Equally it’s the type of approach of the PSNI press statement that presents every ’dissenter’ from the status-quo as being wedded to physical force republicanism. But of course its much more complicated than this…. read full story / add a comment |
