Last weeks demonstration ater breaking through police lines

Last Tuesday the Gardaí attempted to stop the Anti-Capitalist Bloc marching to join up with the Right to Work Campaign at the Dail protest. Despite riding horses into the march they failed to either deny us our freedom to protest or to provoke a response as we pushed through and around them. Join us this week, same time and same place as we once more assert our freedom to protest. [Italiano] read full story / add a comment

On 24 November 2009 250,000 public sector workers in Ireland took part in a national strike against planned pay cuts. Many WSM members who work in the public sector played a direct part in the organisation of the strike and student members helped organise solidarity actions at the universities where strikes were happening. They also toured other picket lines to send in reports and photos. Here we present these reports and the reports sent in by members on strike who had access to smart phones with which they sent live news on the day to the WSM twitter feed read full story / add a comment

On 28 September 2009 the Kennedy Road commune, one of 14 shack settlements in Durban governed autonomously and democratically by Abahlali baseMjondolo was attacked by a militia chanting fascist slogans against non-Zulus. Their stated aim was to kill Abahlali baseMjondolo leader S'bu Zikode.

There was spontaneous resistance to the militia and after a 23 hour battle they were decisively routed. The police then stepped in and arrested key AbM leaders while, under police protection, the militia systematically destroyed the homes of more than 30 Abahlali leaders. Local ANC leaders from outside of the settlement then took control of it with full backing of the police and senior politicians.

Attacks, death threats and have now spread to nearby settlements and it is crystal clear that there is a major state backed attack on the largest poor people's movement in Africa.

WSM supporting the workers at the Four courts

On Friday 31st July workers at Thomas Cook occupied the shop on Grafton street. Management got a court injunction against the occupation and on Monday morning a huge force of Gardai sealed off the area, smashed their way into the shop and arrested the 28 workers inside. The workers at Thomas Cook were fighting for a better redundancy package. To the approximately €700,000 offered by the company, the workers are demanding an added €300,000. That afternoon the High Court released the workers and negotiations were started on an improved redundancy package. The articles were written by WSM members involved in supporting the struggle of the Thomas Cook workers. read full story / add a comment

The long running struggle in Erris (Rossport) against Shell's attempt to impose an experimental gas pipeline on the local community has once more errupted in recent days with repeated local direct actions against the compound Shell are trying to construct. In his article Erris: Community in Struggle against Shell WSM member Sean Mallory details the latest events following the resumption of construction. Here we provide background articles on the struggle and a focus on the events of last Summer and Autumn which culminated in Shell having to halt construction over winter. The WSM has been active within the community and the national campaign since its beginning. For us, the basis of this campaign is direct action; a local community struggling to gain control over their own environment and the decisions that affect them. Back in 2006 we published this overview of the struggle and laid out the reasons why the Shell pipeline at Rossport is not safe. As well as the issue of local safety the core issue of the struggle continues to be the deal Shell was given for the gas extraction which will see them pay no royalties, this is why Ireland stands to lose €400 billion in natural gas and oil deposits. read full story / add a comment

Today as in the past, May Day means respect for mobilizations throughout the world by workers who suffer, at times even paying with their lives, for the sake of their struggles to improve the condition of men and women who labour under the control of capitalism.
As anarchist communists, we support the struggle for a radical change to a society of freedom, equality and solidarity, but we do not forget that in many countries, workers do not even have the most basic possibility to organise into unions, and many work in subhuman conditions for subhuman pay. Our thoughts today go to these workers, as we seek to strengthen the networks of support for the struggles of all the peoples of the world. read full story / add a comment

Following on from the occupation of the Waterford Glass plant in February which managed to save some of the jobs and improve redundancy conditions workers in Belfast at Visteon occupied their factor last week. With plant closures happening across the island of Ireland both these occupations provide an example of workers taking direct action to preserve jobs and/or force employers to improve on redundancy conditions. Here we present reports from WSM members from these occupations and background articles. read full story / add a comment

Along with thousands of others WSM members have been taking part in protests in Dublin, Cork and Belfast against the Israeli attacks on Gaza. Here we present a collection of writings we have published on Palestine as well as articles by our members published elsewhere and useful articles our members have helped get re-published.

All this helps put into context our participation in the protests as well as past activity which has included visits to Palestine by WSM members and helping to tour and fundraisers for the Israeli anarchist organisation 'Anarchists Against the Wall'. read full story / add a comment
