On Friday 31st July workers at Thomas Cook occupied the shop on Grafton street. Management got a court injunction against the occupation and on Monday morning a huge force of Gardai sealed off the area, smashed their way into the shop and arrested the 28 workers inside. The workers at Thomas Cook were fighting for a better redundancy package. To the approximately €700,000 offered by the company, the workers are demanding an added €300,000. That afternoon the High Court released the workers and negotiations were started on an improved redundancy package. The articles were written by WSM members involved in supporting the struggle of the Thomas Cook workers. read full story / add a comment
The long running struggle in Erris (Rossport) against Shell's attempt to impose an experimental gas pipeline on the local community has once more errupted in recent days with repeated local direct actions against the compound Shell are trying to construct. In his article Erris: Community in Struggle against Shell WSM member Sean Mallory details the latest events following the resumption of construction. Here we provide background articles on the struggle and a focus on the events of last Summer and Autumn which culminated in Shell having to halt construction over winter. The WSM has been active within the community and the national campaign since its beginning. For us, the basis of this campaign is direct action; a local community struggling to gain control over their own environment and the decisions that affect them. Back in 2006 we published this overview of the struggle and laid out the reasons why the Shell pipeline at Rossport is not safe. As well as the issue of local safety the core issue of the struggle continues to be the deal Shell was given for the gas extraction which will see them pay no royalties, this is why Ireland stands to lose €400 billion in natural gas and oil deposits. read full story / add a comment

Today as in the past, May Day means respect for mobilizations throughout the world by workers who suffer, at times even paying with their lives, for the sake of their struggles to improve the condition of men and women who labour under the control of capitalism.
As anarchist communists, we support the struggle for a radical change to a society of freedom, equality and solidarity, but we do not forget that in many countries, workers do not even have the most basic possibility to organise into unions, and many work in subhuman conditions for subhuman pay. Our thoughts today go to these workers, as we seek to strengthen the networks of support for the struggles of all the peoples of the world. read full story / add a comment

Following on from the occupation of the Waterford Glass plant in February which managed to save some of the jobs and improve redundancy conditions workers in Belfast at Visteon occupied their factor last week. With plant closures happening across the island of Ireland both these occupations provide an example of workers taking direct action to preserve jobs and/or force employers to improve on redundancy conditions. Here we present reports from WSM members from these occupations and background articles. read full story / add a comment

In Australia today is Labour Day aka "Moomba" to commemorate the 8 hour day: - 8 hours work, 8 hours rest, 8 hours recreation - won by direct action when stone masons walked off the Melbourne University construction site after 8 hours and then to other sites around the city calling on all to end their labours after 8 hours in 1856. read full story / add a comment

Along with thousands of others WSM members have been taking part in protests in Dublin, Cork and Belfast against the Israeli attacks on Gaza. Here we present a collection of writings we have published on Palestine as well as articles by our members published elsewhere and useful articles our members have helped get re-published.
All this helps put into context our participation in the protests as well as past activity which has included visits to Palestine by WSM members and helping to tour and fundraisers for the Israeli anarchist organisation 'Anarchists Against the Wall'. read full story / add a comment

When this essay first appeared in Fifth Estate in the spring of 1985, the Vietnam War already seemed to be receding into ancient history. Central America was at that time being battered by the latest incarnation of "the best and the brightest," and it was being done more conveniently with money and proxies, rather than with "American boys," who tend to get themselves unceremoniously killed while smashing up other people's neighborhoods read full story / add a comment
In 2006 the two largest social movements in South Africa rejected the appalling Trotskyist authoritarianism of the Centre for Civil Society and Khanya College. For this they were wildly slandered as criminal by the Trots and some people were even sold out to their bosses and threatened with violence.
Later that year the authoritarianism of the AIDC was exposed and then, pehaps most shockingly, Lynn Moonsamy, the elected leader of the Crossmoor informal settlement in Durban, issued a statement alleging that she had ben forced out of her home by threats of violence and slander from the Centre for Civil Society. Numerous people in Durban have confirmed the validity of her statement and that people speaking up for her have been threatened in all kinds of ways.
Now the ZACF has taken on, directly, Trevor Ngwane's authoritarianism. read full story / add a comment
