There are two possible futures. In one of them, the conflicts between the imperialist countries, and between them and China, will grow until some miscalculation leads to a nuclear war which could destroy humanity. The other possibility, the only means of avoiding that fate, is a workers' revolution to abolish capitalism and eliminate the causes of war. We can do it and we start by building the labour movement and taking a stand against militarism today. The Black Eagles paramilitary group sent an extremely troubling death threat to the leadership of SINTRAEMCALI, a trade union in Valle de Cauca, Colombia, on April 21. The threat specifically targeted Jorge Ivan Velez and Albert Quintero, President and Vice-President of SINTRAEMCALI, and included an invitation to their own funeral. The union received the threat one week after President Obama announced that the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement would enter into effect beginning on May 15, 2012, and the threat highlights the precarious situation of labor rights in the country and the dangers faced by those who seek to defend them.

El grupo paramilitar de las Águilas Negras les envió una amenaza de muerte muy preocupantea los líderes de Sintraemcali, un sindicato en Valle del Cauca, Colombia, el 21 de abril. Jorge Iván Vélez y Albert Quintero, el presidente y el vicepresidente de Sintraemcali, fueron los blancos de la amenaza que les invitó a su propio funeral. El sindicato recibió la amenaza una semana después de que el Presidente Obama anunció que el Tratado de Libre Comercio entre los Estados Unidos y Colombia se implementará a partir del 15 de mayo de 2012, y la amenaza destaca la situación precaria de los derechos laborales en el país y los peligros enfrentados por la gente que defiende esos derechos.

La relación entre movimientos sociales, partidos políticos y gobiernos de izquierda fue el tema de uno de los encuentros realizados en la tarde de ayer 13 de abril en la V Cumbre de los Pueblos. El brasileño Rubens Iris, Foro Sao Paulo, una articulación de partidos políticos de izquierda latinoamericanos iniciada en la década de los 90, explicó la clave del funcionamiento de ese espacio: «Entender las diferencias y el papel de cada sector por separado, movimientos sociales y partidos políticos, y especialmente respetar la autonomía del movimiento social». Para Iris, la unidad entre partidos políticos y movimientos sociales ha conseguido avances aunque sigue existiendo la necesidad de que las transformaciones sociales sigan presentes. El brasileño advierte que es necesaria una mayor unidad donde hay gobiernos de izquierda para poder debatir lo que todavía falta y profundizar las transformaciones: «Es importante sentar a los jefes de Estado en los foros sociales». Considera que esa unidad es necesaria en Colombia para conseguir cambios importantes en la realidad del país y que ojalá la Cumbre contribuya a la unidad política y social. El colombiano Carlos García, miembro del comité coordinador nacional de la Marcha Patriótica, caracterizó el movimientos social colombiano en los últimos años. Una de las principales apuestas ha sido «avanzar en lo que nos identifica y nos une para la articulación de la lucha social respetando la autonomía de cada grupo y organización». Ese factor ha posibilitado que el movimiento social supere las luchas coyunturales y se plantee una construcción de movimiento y proceso político y social a medio y largo plazo y para ello ha sido fundamental la construcción de confianzas. read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea have released a very detailed report into the GSOC 'investigation' of the Garda at the center of the 'Corrib Cops Rape Tape' which first came to public attention one year ago today. The report reveals that the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) engaged in spin and misinformation that misled the public over the Corrib ‘rape’ recording incident of March 2011 and undermined the case against Gardaí. The report details GSOC’s attempts to serve the interests of An Garda Síochána by undermining the women who made the recording public, while deflecting attention from the behaviour of Gardaí. The document was prepared by Shell to Sea with one of the women about whom the ‘rape’ comments were made and seven academics at NUI Maynooth.
