southern africa / imperialism / war / opinion / analysis Friday June 10, 2011 01:12 by Shawn Hattingh
In this article, using an anarchist analysis, it will be argued that this lopsided trade, expansive investment and projection of state power by the South African ruling class are signs of the imperialist role they play in southern Africa. In undertaking this, it will be outlined how the South African ruling class, as an integral part of their imperialist role, are conducting a class war against the workers and the poor across sub-Saharan Africa. Through examining this class war, it will hopefully become clear that the South African state is being used as a key instrument by the ruling class – made up of capitalists and high-ranking state officials – to further their own interests in southern Africa. The consequence of highlighting the imperialist nature of the South African state also has implications for the strategies and tactics that should be used in struggle. It will be strongly argued that due to its hierarchical centralising and expansionist ambitions, the state cannot be used as a tool for liberation in South Africa or in the region.

The feeling of the nearing immanent disaster of the 1967 war spoils start to color the joint struggle with a special Spring aroma. It seems that even the sting of the tear gas and the pains from rubber coated bullet, batons and tear gas missiles are a bit milder. Even the putrid smell of the skunkish water ("The Smell of Israel") is not stinking so much as in the past. The media and even the state politicians mention our struggles more and more as responsible at least in part to their problems. The inconsistency in their repression steps, express their helplessness in their efforts to put end to the joint struggle restricted by the arena being open to international media. A family member of mine recently sent me an article from Vanity Fair by economist Joseph Stiglitz about the problem of elite control within the United States. While it's refreshing that the article is talking about the problem to a mainstream audience, it stops short of delving deep enough the problem at a systemic level, and perhaps more importantly: doesn't address the need for complete systemic change. The broader points that Stiglitz brings up are also supported by the Economic Policy Institute - an economics resource that has some great research reports on the topic of how government policy has favored the elite - including: a report showing how the budget cuts proposed in comparison to the tax cuts given and another showing how recently all economic gains have gone to the top 10% (with over 75% of those gains going to the top 1%). read full story / add a comment

Channel 2 TV long and serious item exposed the brutality of the state forces, show the heroic involvement of children, youth, women, men and the Israeli anarchists in the struggle of the tinny village of Nabi Saleh. They bring it as the most prominent of the other 10 main locations of joint popular struggles, and conclude that it has already defeated the Israeli propaganda... and started the third Intifada. The approaching September is felt both in the weekly struggles, in the climate of the whole region, and desperate actions. [Italiano] read full story / add a comment
In the morning we arrived at the Ofer compound, one of the many luxurious compounds built for the comfort of over 6000 Palestinian prisoners currently being held by Israel. The compound contains a huge prison and a military court in which Palestinian prisoners, young and old are judged by Israeli military officers. ---- Here there is no racism or discrimination, because here everybody without exception has the right to an unjust trial. -- At the entrance to the military court there are two cages, a small one for those arriving from the Israeli side and a bigger one where Palestinian detainee’s families are waiting. -- Some of them have been through a long and expensive journey in order to get here and meet their loved ones, be it for just a few minutes. read full story / add a comment
Just another week of activities of the joint struggle against the separation fence and occupation. The imminent disaster the naZionist state leaders expect to occur after September is finding its expression in the escalation of the brutality of attacks on the Palestinians and the activists who join them. Gradually, the persistent struggle of the small village of Nabi Salih is getting more and more attention from the media. Both Beit Ummar and Nabi Salih, where the struggle is against the progressive encroachment of neighboring colonial settlement and the progressive robbery of village lands, are receiving harsher repression by the Israeli State forces. The activists of the Anarchists Against the Wall initiative are proud to be part of these struggles. [Italiano] read full story / add a comment
The Nakba day was not just a commemoration day of the 1948 conquest of most of Palestine by the Zionist organization and the transfer of most of the Palestinian inhabitant. It was a week of escalation of the struggle against the 1967 occupation and the 1948 robbery of Palestine and the continuous transfer of its inhabitants. The state forces increased the intensity of repression in the regular weekend locations of joint struggle where the anarchists against the wall join the Palestinian activists - Bil'in, Beit Ommar, Ni'ilin, Nabi Saleh, Al-Ma'asara, and the regional one in Qalandia. The Nacba week joint struggle was also expressed Al-Walaja and in Tel-Aviv-Jaffa: both in the Palestinian neighborhood of Jaffa and in center of Tel-Aviv. [Italiano] read full story / add a comment

The main joint struggles and locations of weekly actions: Beit Ommar, Bil’in, Izbat at Tabib, Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah, Lod, Ma’asara, An Nabi Salih, Ni'lin, South Hebron Mountain - celebrated the crumbling of Israeli strategy of divide and rule. The compromise between Fatah and Hamas ended the split the weekly demonstrations protested against. The uprising of the masses of the Arabs in the region and the approaching September energized the weekly demonstrations and increased the numbers of participant - both Palestinians and Israelis. read full story / add a comment
The sixth year of joint struggle of Bil'in that inspired the Palest5inian Ni'ilin, Ma'asara, Beit Ommar, and Nabi Saleh, and some say also the idea of the third Intifada. And in Israel it facilitated the joining of radical Zionist to direct actions against the occupation and transfer both in occupied East Jerusalem (Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan mainly) and within the 1948 borders in the Lod region, In Taibe and with the Bedouins of the south. The yearly international conference in Bil'in enabled integration of struggles and drawing political profits by leaders of the west bank (whose support of the ongoing struggle is mainly verbal only). The Israeli state forces express their disapproval in many ways but their inconsistency and frequent change in suppression tactics show they are still with out a clue. It was struggle by the workers which created the social bonds we have enjoyed to date, including the welfare state, through collective bargaining and rights which could be enforced. But today's deterioration in democracy is becoming all too plain to see - authoritarianism is spreading throughout society. [Italiano] read full story / add a comment

It seems that things are as usual... but hardly so. The uprising of the Arab masses of all the region, and the September UN intervention in Palestine is nearing, and some optimism is in the air. Gradually increase the number of Israeli activists who join the struggle at Beit Ummar, Bil'in, Ramallah, Jerusalem-Al Quds (Sheikh Jarrah, Silwan) Lod-Ramla-Dahamash, Ma'sara, Nabi Salih, Ni'lin, Tel Aviv/Jaffa, Wad Rahal and other locations. It seems the Spring is not only a weather process. [Italiano] read full story / add a comment

Israeli expectation for the immanent political defeat on September at the United Nations and more, increase viciousness in many spheres of suppression of the Palestinians. This is expressed also in the joint struggles in Al-Araqeeb Bedouin village and in Palestinian neighborhood of Lod within Israel, and on South Hebron mountain region and Beit Ummar in the occupied Palestinian lands. We are not alone. We join the popular Palestinian comities for the struggle against suppression, house demolitions, creeping transfer, the separation robbing fence, settler colonialism, settler's harassments of neighbors and encroachment on villages lands, and occupation. Among Israelis too we are not alone. Some radicals struggle for long for the rights of Bedouins within the 1948 borders. Others involve for long with the southern Hebron mountain dwellers against transfer and settlers' harassments. There are others, less radicals who organize educational tours of Israelis in the Palestinian regions of struggle. Many of them join from time to time the anarchists against the wall initiative in our joint struggles with the Palestinian villagers at week ends (usually). It seems the uprising in the various countries of the Arab region influence the struggle in Palestine too. [Italiano] read full story / add a comment
On the back ground of the general uprisings in the Arab countries, the persistence of the joint struggle contribute its share of rebellion. As the moment of truth for the last settler colonialist project in the modern world approach, the rightists intensify their onslaught and the Zionist and a-Zionist radical left adopt the anarchist persistent direct action mode. Some locations like Al Arakib, Lod, and occupied East Jerusalem they are even the dominants in mobilizing Israelis. The joint struggles against occupation and the separation fence the anarchists against the wall participate in for long - Beit Ommar, Bidu, Bil'in, Al Ma'asara, Nabi, Saleh, Ni'lin, draw more and more radical Israelis.
