For many people on the left, within and outside of Southern Africa, the ‘Bolivarian Revolution’ is seen as a beacon of socialist hope in a sea of capitalist despair. The reason why many leftists feel so strongly attached to this project, and promote it as an alternative, is because they have come to view it as a move by the Venezuelan state towards creating a genuine, free form of socialism or at the very least an experiment that profoundly breaks with the tenets of neo-liberalism. This article, however, questions the assumption that the Venezuelan state is embarking upon a path to create a truly egalitarian and free socialist society. It will, therefore, be argued that Venezuela is not in a transitional phase to socialism; rather it is a capitalist country where the private sector and important state-owned companies seek to maximise profits. read full story / add a comment

Global Crisis; American Nightmare A global economic crisis has brought a new Great Depression to the doorsteps of working class families. While the corporations, government officials, and bureaucracies are experiencing record profits and compensation, those who are least able to pay are expected to shoulder the majority of the burden [1,2]. This collapse is placed upon the backs of workers, and even more to the most oppressed in working class communities, for example: working class women, immigrants, blacks, and latinos [3,4]. Despite the promises of a Democratic congress and presidency, deportations of undocumented immigrants have dramatically increased since Obama took office, tearing communities apart and criminalizing whole populations. If we don’t fight back, the crisis may drive a permanent decline in our standard of living, deepen the domination over the oppressed, and widen the gaps in American society. En los últimos meses se han sucedido los titulares relacionados con el País Vasco en los medios corporativos de todo el mundo. Sin embargo, tanto éstos como las grandes agencias de prensa de las que se nutren han tendido a transmitir una visión muy parcial y limitada, servil a los intereses capitalistas en juego, ocultando o tergiversando aspectos cruciales para entender dicha realidad.
Es debido a este vacío y al gran interés y necesidad de información verídica y actualizada existente en la izquierda latinoamericana que decidimos ofrecerles a los lectores de Anarkismo.net, fundamentalmente a quienes nos leen desde estas latitudes, un punto de vista militante pero no por ello menos riguroso sobre la historia y la actualidad del País Vasco.

Depuis 2008, partout dans le monde, les classes populaires luttent contre les politiques d’austérité qu’on tente de leur faire avaler à coup de discours serviles et de violence policière. La détermination est grande, les combats sont parfois épiques, mais les victoires sont malheureusement très rares. Les étudiantes et les étudiants québécois ont présentement tout en leurs mains pour créer une brèche dans ce long parcours de défaites populaires et de repli.

Don Jennings passed away March 8, 2012, in Richmond, Kentucky. He is best known to many of us by his pen name, Randy "Prole Cat" Lowens. In lieu of flowers the Family request contributions to any public library in Don’s memory. Don was a former Workers Solidarity Alliance member, a founding member of Atlanta's Capital Terminus Collective and a supporter of Common Struggle Libertarian Communist Federation. ...para além da propaganda forjada na grande mídia internacional de uma suposta “ameaça iraniana” para a segurança da ordem internacional, o fato é que os Estados Unidos estão, por todos os meios, tentando forçar ações mais “ousadas” por parte do governo iraniano de forma a construir mais justificativas para uma futura invasão. Os Estados Unidos sabem que sanções econômicas nunca enfraquecem os regimes - quer ditatoriais quer não - que de alguma maneira se opõem a aceitar uma posição de governos clientelistas sob dominação estadunidense. Quanto ao enfraquecimento de um regime, sanções econômicas, de modo geral, se mostraram contra-produtivas. O que acaba por ocorrer é o fortalecimento do regime por maior apoio que passa a receber de sua população ou pelo aumento da repressão interna, que passa a justificar a repressão a qualquer movimento de oposição sob o argumento de que esses movimentos são financiados pelas forças imperialistas. To show our power, on May 1st, 2012, we will be organizing for such a mass participatory and bold collective action: a national general strike, mass boycott, student strike/ walk-out and mass day of action. We will be organizing within our unions- or informal workplace organizations where there’s no union or the union isn’t supportive- to hold a one-day general strike. Where a strike is not possible, we will be organizing people to call in sick, or take a personal day, as part of a coordinated “sick-out”. Those who are students will be walking-out of their schools (or not showing up in the first place). In the community, we will be holding a mass boycott and refusing to make any purchase on that day.
