The United Front tactic – aimed at uniting masses of workers in action and winning Communist leadership for the working class – was adopted as policy by the Communist International (Comintern) in 1921 and will be discussed later in this series. However, there are important examples of working class unity in action which predate Comintern policy and bear relevance to the united fronts discussion. One often-cited example is the united front to defend the gains of the February Revolution from a military coup in Russia in 1917, which will be discussed in the next article in this series. Before looking at this, however, there is another example of proletarian unity in action – that didn’t seek to win Communist leadership – which warrants attention; that of a revolutionary worker-peasant alliance. This conception of united front action found expression in Italy’s anti-militarist “red blocs” and it is to these that we now turn. In 1871, Karl Marx wrote that governments use war as a fraud, a ‘humbug, intended to defer the struggle of the classes’. In 1914, that fraud was so effective that not only most workers but also most Marxists supported their respective nation’s rush to war. Il 7 giugno 1914, ad Ancona si svolgono dei disordini tra lavoratori anconetani (principalmente portuari e ferrovieri appartenenti a sindacati autonomi di indirizzo socialista ed anarchico) e forze dell'ordine, schierate per difendere la parata militare celebrativa dello Statuto Albertino. Ancona è all'epoca una città che ha già avuto numerose esperienze di rivolte e sollevamenti popolari: dai moti del pane del 1898 agli scioperi del 1913. In quel periodo inoltre si assisteva alla creazione di un fronte comune di diversi movimenti e sindacati, uniti dall'antimilitarismo. No final da década de 1970, mas especificamente no ano de 1978, após 10 anos de estagnação política do movimento operário que tem como um último grande momento as mobilizações da categoria no ano de 1968, causado especialmente pela repressão da ditadura civil-militar e pelo atrelamento cada vez mais dos sindicatos a um plano oficial de supercontrole do governo, o sindicalismo brasileiro passa a ter novamente o seu papel de protagonista entre as formas de contestação do sistema político, social, econômico, cultural e, principalmente, organizacional do ponto de vista enfrentamento capital versus trabalho. Esse artigo pretende retomar aspectos básicos do sindicalismo no Brasil, a partir da criação da Confederação Operária Brasileira e, apontar como os momentos de maior radicalização do movimento sindical no Brasil foram os que, em certa medida, tiveram uma ampla participação de base e sem controle centralizado de ideologias autoritárias tantos de esquerda como de direita e, ou, corporativistas.
