The end of the 1960’s in northern Ireland were a unique time when, as elsewhere around the world, mass popular protest emerged onto the streets with ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The unique circumstances of northern Ireland and the particular form the state backlash took there resulted in a military conflict that lasted some 30 years and dominated politics on the entire island and to a much lesser extent in Britain. Although tens if not hundreds of thousands of people made this history it can also be told as the history of some of the prominent individuals involved, including the Irish republican socialist activist Bernadette Devlin McAliskey. read full story / add a comment

Entender el conflicto y sus dinámicas. Saber por qué al menos tres generaciones de campesinos en Colombia vienen alzándose en armas. On the 30th January 1972 British soldiers opened fire on protesters in the city of Derry, north-west Ireland. Twenty six unarmed protesters were shot, 13 died immediately or within hours, one more died just over four months later. Derry was in the section of Ireland claimed by the British state and the shootings happened in the context of the suppression of a growing civil rights movement demanding equality for Catholics in the 6 of Ulster’s counties claimed by Britain. ...para além da propaganda forjada na grande mídia internacional de uma suposta “ameaça iraniana” para a segurança da ordem internacional, o fato é que os Estados Unidos estão, por todos os meios, tentando forçar ações mais “ousadas” por parte do governo iraniano de forma a construir mais justificativas para uma futura invasão. Os Estados Unidos sabem que sanções econômicas nunca enfraquecem os regimes - quer ditatoriais quer não - que de alguma maneira se opõem a aceitar uma posição de governos clientelistas sob dominação estadunidense. Quanto ao enfraquecimento de um regime, sanções econômicas, de modo geral, se mostraram contra-produtivas. O que acaba por ocorrer é o fortalecimento do regime por maior apoio que passa a receber de sua população ou pelo aumento da repressão interna, que passa a justificar a repressão a qualquer movimento de oposição sob o argumento de que esses movimentos são financiados pelas forças imperialistas. This unjustifiable carnage has again exposed the true face of state terrorism in Turkey. This slaughter exposes the hypocrisy of Erdogan, whose regime has its hands soaked in Kurdish blood while he speaks cynically of human rights in other countries. But it also highlights the hypocrisy of an "international community" that is shocked by the repression in Syria, while it assists the silent slaughter of the Kurdish people. The Kurdish people are now mobilized to define their political project of liberation and to resist the four States which occupy them and oppress them (Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq). La muerte de Kim Jong Il ha servido para reforzar el discurso hegemónico de los EEUU, en el cual, al machacar la histeria contra el Eje del Mal, se refuerza por oposición, que existe un Eje del Bien por antonomasia, liderado por ellos. Este artículo pretende desmitificar ciertos elementos del discurso dominante sobre Corea del Norte, mostrar el carácter selectivo e hipócrita de la crítica de EEUU y sus aliados en contra de este país (mientras silencian cosas mucho peores que ocurren en su "zona de influencia") y demostrar que el régimen norcoreano se sustenta en una situación de crisis y emergencia permanente en la cual la presencia de los EEUU en la península coreana es clave. Aún cuando sea difícil defender el modelo norcoreano desde una perspectiva socialista, es el resultado histórico de fuerzas sociales y políticas que operan en la región, fuerzas que es necesario conocer y comprender. La transmisión de mando ahora entre los Kim es un momento clave en las luchas por la hegemonía en el área Asia-Pacífico que se libran entre China y los EEUU. En ese sentido este artículo no pretende evaluar al régimen en cuanto tal, sino que entender el complejo equilibrio en el cual se sustenta y evidenciar el uso ideológico que de éste hace el sistema imperial de los EEUU read full story / add a comment
