This was a much awaited book. Published originally in French back in 1982, its English version finally saw the light of day, and the wait was well worth it. For those who are not familiar with the subject, the Makhnovists were a libertarian movement, deeply rooted in the traditions of anarchist-communism, that developed an experience of revolutionary changes in the economic and political structures of the backwarded Ukrainian society. To defend the gains of the Social Revolution, they launched a guerrilla warfare in Ukraine against a number of enemies: foreign troops, Nationalists, Whites, different warlords and Bolsheviks. read full story / add a comment

russia / ukraine / belarus / repression / prisoners / news report Tuesday July 05, 2005 18:40 by L. Akai
Alexei Cherepanov from Krasnodar was set up by police in an ongoing history of state repression against anarchists in that city. In August 2004, the court decided that there was no real case against Alexei in light of mounting evidence that police had conspired to frame him and violated procedural norms in his case. But the state prosecutors brought him back to trial. read full story / add a comment

Dear friends, welcome to the spring issue of Avtonom... this year we are turning 10 years, wait for some celebrations to come! Avtonom is a pseudo-quarterly journal by Autonomous Action, which developed from a network to a libertarian communist federation in January 2002, after two years of existence. russia / ukraine / belarus / history / review Thursday May 05, 2005 22:35 by Myles Kennedy
This book is a must for anyone who is confused as to why the Russian Revolution went wrong, for anyone who feels that to explain the aberrations and atrocities perpetrated by the Bolsheviks as necessitated by imperialist blockades or 'objective circumstances', when the USSR spans half the Northern hemisphere, is a bit incredible. This book is a must for anyone who has bought the lie that Stalin single handedly changed the essential ideology of bolshevism. read full story / add a comment
russia / ukraine / belarus / the left / opinion / analysis Monday April 18, 2005 19:41 by Aileen O'Carroll
The question thrown up by the October revolution is fundamental. Once capitalism has been defeated, how is communism to be achieved? While there are certainly faults to be found with aspects of the anarchist movement, at least it cannot be criticised for getting the basics wrong. Anarchists have consistently argued that freedom and democracy are not optional extras. Rather they form part of the conditions necessary for the growth of communism. read full story / add a comment
russia / ukraine / belarus / anarchist movement / news report Saturday February 26, 2005 00:48 by Laure Akai and Mikhail Tsovma
Although many classical anarchist theorists and figures came from Russia, the advent of the Soviet State effectively crushed the movement. Now anarchism is reborn in Russia. Laure Akai and Mikhail Tsovma write from Moscow to tell us a little about the trials and tribulations of the Russian anarchist movement in the early 1990's read full story / add a comment
