As we prepare to enter the 3rd month of the Occupy movement a commonly heard criticism targets both the lack of clear demands and the related complex and often drawn out decision making processes being used at Occupy General Assemblies. These criticisms however miss the point, against the traditional left with its package of pre-set answers (best before 1917) what makes Occupy different is that process of decision making through assembly. The assembly form is not just a way of making decisions but also a different form of doing politics. The Assembly is in embryo the different world we seek to create. read full story / add a comment

This eyewitness account of the build to and events of the 'Occupy' Oakland General Strike of Nov 2 describes how momentum developed in the aftermath of the violent eviction of Occupy Oakland, the events of November 2nd itself including the shut down of the port, the attempted occupation of the Traveler's Aid Society building and the black bloc's attack on bank buildings. En España está avanzando la derecha en todos los frentes. En el electoral, se espera su mayoría absoluta en las elecciones generales del próximo 20 de noviembre. El Partido Socialista Obrero Español llega a las puertas de las elecciones desfondado, tras echar por la borda todo el capital político con el que llegó al gobierno, yendo a remolque de una derecha con la iniciativa en sus manos y a la que le ha abierto las puertas de par tras hacerle gran parte del trabajo sucio. Πολύς κόσμος διατηρεί ακόμα αυταπάτες σχετικά με το «Κόμμα του λαού», το ρόλο και τη λειτουργία του μέσα στην ελληνική κοινωνία. Μιλάμε για κόσμο ο οποίος δεν ανήκει στο Κόμμα αλλά, παρ’ όλα αυτά, το συμπαθεί: είτε ως ψηφοφόρος που το θεωρεί «τίμιο» και «καθαρό» κόμμα (έστω κι αν δε συμφωνεί απαραίτητα με τις θέσεις του) είτε ως ακροαριστερός ή ακόμα και αναρχικός που βλέπει σ’ αυτό ένα περίεργο είδος «συντρόφων» (περίεργο, διότι ενώ τους θεωρεί συντρόφους του, τους βλέπει, παράλληλα, να «προδίδουν» συνεχώς «το κίνημα»). read full story / add a comment

Comment réagir face au mouvement « Occupons X » qui a explosé dans les rues de nombreuses villes à travers le monde, transformant des espaces publics en campements d'opposition? Certaines choses sont évidentes : premièrement, le fait que des milliers de personnes à travers le monde aient envahi des lieux publics pour exprimer leur colère contre le système financier est indéniablement une bonne chose. Ayant campé près de la Banque centrale, sur la rue Dame, samedi, je peux également témoigner du fait que ces manifestations dégagent un optimisme et une espérance qui font si souvent défaut aux parades cérémonielles du milieu militant « fâché ». Mais il y a également, à mon avis, de sérieux problèmes politiques qui empêchent ce mouvement de dépasser son état de « camping radical » et de devenir un véritable mouvement de résistance de la base contre les mesures d'austérité.
