As we prepare to enter the 3rd month of the Occupy movement a commonly heard criticism targets both the lack of clear demands and the related complex and often drawn out decision making processes being used at Occupy General Assemblies. These criticisms however miss the point, against the traditional left with its package of pre-set answers (best before 1917) what makes Occupy different is that process of decision making through assembly. The assembly form is not just a way of making decisions but also a different form of doing politics. The Assembly is in embryo the different world we seek to create. read full story / add a comment

Comment réagir face au mouvement « Occupons X » qui a explosé dans les rues de nombreuses villes à travers le monde, transformant des espaces publics en campements d'opposition? Certaines choses sont évidentes : premièrement, le fait que des milliers de personnes à travers le monde aient envahi des lieux publics pour exprimer leur colère contre le système financier est indéniablement une bonne chose. Ayant campé près de la Banque centrale, sur la rue Dame, samedi, je peux également témoigner du fait que ces manifestations dégagent un optimisme et une espérance qui font si souvent défaut aux parades cérémonielles du milieu militant « fâché ». Mais il y a également, à mon avis, de sérieux problèmes politiques qui empêchent ce mouvement de dépasser son état de « camping radical » et de devenir un véritable mouvement de résistance de la base contre les mesures d'austérité. What are we to make of the global 'Occupy X' movement which has exploded onto the streets of cities across the world, turning public spaces into campsites of opposition? Certain things are obvious: Firstly, the fact that there are thousands of people across the world taking over public spaces to express their anger at the financial system is undeniably a good thing. Having camped out outside the Central Bank on Dame Street on Saturday night, I can also say that these protests exude a positivity and hopefulness that is so often lacking from the ritualistic parades of anger that make up most protest marches. But there are also, in my view, serious political problems that prevent the movement from moving beyond a 'radical sleepover' and becoming a genuine anti-austerity grassroots resistance movement. La délégation est liée à une certaine idée du pouvoir et de l’Etat. C’est le deuxième problème. La conception dominante du vieux socialisme réformiste voyait en l'État le pouvoir par excellence, l’institution décisive à investir, à occuper, à conquérir. Il suffirait de le conquérir pour pouvoir, depuis le haut, changer les choses. Mais « le roi est nu ». L'État ne contient du pouvoir que dans la mesure où il assure un gouvernement normal du système, une gestion ordinaire, compatible avec les paramètres de la reproduction du pouvoir séparé et de la valorisation du Capital.
