This commentary, an input at a Globalization School debate in Cape Town, engages current labor and Left debates on building alternatives, drawing on the experiences of the radical wing of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, and on anarchism and syndicalism. It argues for a strategy of bottom-up mobilization based on debate and pluralism, and building structures of counter-power and a revolutionary counter-culture that can prefigure and create a new social order. The aim is to foster a class-based movement against exploitation, domination, and oppression, including national oppression, that can win reforms through self-activity, unite a range of struggles against oppression, and develop the capacity and unity needed for deep social change. This should be outside parliament, the political party system and the state. The outcome, ultimately, would be the replacement of capitalism, the state, and social and economic inequality, by a universal human community based on self-management, the democratization of daily life, participatory economic planning, and libertarian socialism. ... read full story / add a comment

It’s been around 100 days since the birth of a “new” Zimbabwe: 37 years of authoritarian rule by Robert Mugabe ended when Emmerson Mnangagwa took power through a soft military coup . But what has changed, what we can we expect now? This paper argues that no deep changes are taking place. The slight liberalizing of political life and some promises of economic reform (good and bad) do matter. But the changes in the White House of Zimbabwe centre on removing one vicious state capitalist manager to make way for another, and will not bring liberation for the masses. This replacement does not address the problems Zimbabwe faces: a ruthless ruling class, a predatory state, crisis-ridden capitalism and imperialism. The problem is not individuals: the system is the problem. This paper argues against Mugabe and Mnangagwa, but also against the state as a form of social organization and against the idea that states can be used for liberating the people. All states oppress the working class, peasantry and poor, and the state in Zimbabwe is just an extreme example of how states are based on repression, corruption and promoting the interests of economic and political elites (the ruling class). It rejects the notion that Mugabe was a champion of the poor and landless, and the claim that his ousting was a defeat for progressive forces. But it has no illusions in Mnangagwa. True, real freedom will never come through parliament, or military take- overs, or old men who take turns to spout out neo-liberal or ultra-nationalist rhetoric, while their hands are covered in blood. It can only come from mass action and organising, the transformative engine to build real democratic, stateless socialism based on self-management, freedom political tolerance and common property (anarchism).

En 2012, l’effervescence de la révolte contre Bachar al-Assad leur offre l’opportunité d’une révolution dans la révolution pour donner vie au projet d’une démocratie sans État. Mais cette ambitieuse aventure politique doit faire face à bien des difficultés intérieures ou menaces extérieures. Parce que « le Kurdistan libertaire nous concerne » ( [1]), il est intéressant de connaître ses fondements idéologiques (I), puis de comprendre les ressorts des institutions proto-étatiques mises en place dans une relation incestueuse avec une société civile qui s’auto-organise (II). Ha superado una moción de censura impulsada por el partido fujimorista Fuerza Popular precisamente con votos de diputados de dicha fuerza opositora. Al poco tiempo declara el indulto a Alberto Fujimori, preso por crímenes de lesa humanidad. Decenas de miles de personas han tomado las calles al grito de ¡El indulto es un insulto! y exigiendo la dimisión de todos los corruptos. También han dimitido, por el momento, dos de sus ministros.

These days people are gathering spontaneously in the streets of downtown La Plata and Buenos Aires neighborhoods. People are taking the streets against the government and in protest of another wave of attacks on social benefits. Moments like these bring flashbacks to the days of December 2001, the year of the popular rebellion that rose up in the wake of the financial collapse that rocked Argentina. This was the year when the people, the masses, were fighting in the the streets, taking over factories and organizing neighborhood assemblies against many of the direct effects of imperialism, the state, and the capitalist system: their government, the impositions of the IMF (International Monetary Fund), and their so-called “representatives” in different institutions. Mucho se ha hablado en los últimos años de la lucha del pueblo kurdo y el modelo de sociedad que están construyendo en Rojava. No hace mucho tuvieron en lugar en Bilbao las segundas Jornadas Internacionales de Ecología Social, donde, entre otras cosas, se abordaron otras experiencias prácticas que tienen cierta similitud: Luchas por la defensa del territorio en el bosque de Hambach y Euskal Herria, el neo-zapatismo chiapaneco,... El confederalismo democrático kurdo no es sólo una bella y lejana idea, sino una fuente de inspiración. En esa línea la plataforma catalana Azadî de solidaridad con el pueblo kurdo ha realizado una interesante propuesta de organización para los Comités de Defensa de la República [CDRs].

Recordamos que los Comités de Defensa de la República son grupos surgidos en Cataluña en 2017 con el objetivo inicial de facilitar la realización del referéndum de independencia del 1 de octubre. Tras el referéndum, adoptaron el nuevo objetivo de luchar por el cumplimiento de su resultado y la proclamación de la república catalana. Se basan en asambleas abiertas y realizaron su primera reunión de coordinación el 15 de octubre en Sabadell, a la que asistieron delegaciones de más de 100 CDRs. La cuarta reunión de coordinación tuvo lugar el 4 de noviembre en Manlleu donde representantes de 172 comités de los más de 250 existentes a día de hoy [ver mapa] decidieron cambiar su denominación por de Defensa de la República [hasta entonces habían sido de Defensa del Referéndum] y dieron por concluído el proceso de creación de la coordinadora nacional [@CDRCatOficial en Twitter]. A los 4 días tuvo lugar la huelga del 8N en la que participaron activamente.

Sin entrar a valorar aquí el procés, o la participación de las libertarias en él, reproducimos a continuación la propuesta, que no deja de ser las típicas asambleas de delegadas revocables en las que se basan los comités y los consejos obreros, pero incorporando algunas de las herramientas que han utilizado en Kurdistán para una mejor integración de las distintas sensibilidades. ... read full story / add a comment

South Africa is in a mess. That is clear, more than 20 years since the end of apartheid. We have won many things. It was our struggle that beat apartheid laws and the old government. But we are not free yet. Corruption, poverty, job losses, hatred, violence, the apartheid legacy are all part of the mess.

What is the way forward for South Africa? It is struggle by the masses of the people for a better society.
