Presentamos este reportaje en ocasión del 8 de marzo, día internacional de la mujer trabajadora. Qué mejor para ilustrar esa fecha que el ejemplo de un sector con una composición fundamentalmente femenina donde se hacen patentes las duras condiciones de trabajo a que se hallan sometidas las mujeres a inicios del siglo XXI en un Estado supuestamente avanzado como es el español. Afortunadamente, no sólo encontramos explotación, sino también lucha y compromiso militante en pro de la dignidad de los trabajadores y las trabajadoras. Instead of defeat, we can move forward. We support the popular call promoted by the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) revolutionary union and others for a state-wide General Strike. This should include public and private sectors, union and non-unionized sectors, students and unemployed. As other communities and sectors of the working-class step forward to join the struggle they must be free to raise their own specific concerns and demands. The movement must be open to “speakers from the floor”. We must resist any pressure to reduce the movement to a small number of lowest common-denominator demands that favor relatively privileged layers and that the system finds acceptable. Mercedes Herrerra is a 39-year-old Mexican immigrant living in Houston, Texas. Working primarily for staffing agencies, she first started cleaning houses and sports facilities in 1996. Paid meager wages, working long hours and travelling some distance to get to new job sites, her staffing agency charged her as much as $100 per week for gloves, and cleaning supplies.
