Protea du Sud est l'un de ces « quartiers informels » (bidonville) qui n'a pas encore bénéficié au cours des 16 dernières années de la démocratie. À l'heure actuelle, les gens de Protea-sud vivent toujours sans aucun service (eau, électricité et sanitaires). Hier, la communauté qui vit dans des maisons à loyer modéré a décidé de débrancher l'électricité que les gens des habitations informelles avaient connecté dans leurs baraques en tôle. Ils sont allés dans le quartier pour débrancher et battre les gens qui avaient connecté l'électricité dans leurs baraques. Protea South is one of the informal settlements that has not yet benefited in the last 16 years of democracy. As it stands, people in Protea South are still living without services (water, electricity and toilets). Yesterday the community that lives in the bond houses decided to disconnect the electricity that the people from the informal settlement connected into their tin shacks. They went around disconnecting and beating people who connected the electricity within their shacks. The Abahlali baseMjondolo commune in the Kennedy Road squatter camp was smashed late last year when the movement was attacked by an ethic militia organised by the local party structures and backed by the police and intelligence agencies. The movement has regrouped and recently organised a major protest on Jacob Zuma in downtown Durban despite severe intimidation.
