The recent meeting of fellow workers in Uganda to form a Regional Organizational Committee (ROC) was a landmark in the history of the IWW, and the springboard for similar emerging ROCs on the African continent. We put in unending zeal and effort to work not only as a union, but also toward our main goal of abolishing the wage system. ... read full story / add a comment

As the world watches events unfold in Egypt, the fates of other autocratic leaders in sub-Saharan Africa seem to have been relegated to fourth page news. However, it is worth considering the similarities and differences, particularly for Uganda where the incumbent President of 25 years will face re-election on Friday 18th February. ... read full story / add a comment

Just how bad is the state of Swaziland’s economy? It’s a ‘catastrophe’ if you believe Roman Grynberg, senior research fellow at the non-governmental Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis, who said this week that changes made in the past to the way Southern Africa Customs Union (SACU) revenues were distributed, added to further changes being discussed for the future, would have ‘absolutely catastrophic’ consequences for countries such as Swaziland and would be ‘serious for political stability in the whole Southern African region’. ... read full story / add a comment

An Anti-homosexuality Bill has been tabled before the Parliament of Uganda. Many have risen to denounce and oppose it, both within the country and from across the globe. Many others have risen to support it. Some in the Church have argued in favor of the capital punishment in the Bill, others have argued for life imprisonment. The ones arguing for life imprisonment are actually considered to be in opposition to the Bill. After all, in Uganda “homosexuality is already an offence under the Penal Code of Uganda as is same-sex marriage, which is prohibited by the Constitution.” ... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

Who imagined that in 2009, the world's governments would be declaring a new War on Pirates? As you read this, the British Royal Navy -- backed by the ships of more than two dozen nations, from the US to China -- is sailing into Somalian waters to take on men we still picture as parrot-on-the-shoulder pantomime villains. They will soon be fighting Somalian ships and even chasing the pirates onto land, into one of the most broken countries on earth. But behind the arrr-me-hearties oddness of this tale, there is an untold scandal. The people our governments are labeling as "one of the great menaces of our times" have an extraordinary story to tell -- and some justice on their side. ... read full story / add a comment
