South Africa is particularly rich in mineral resources and is one of the
leading raw material exporters in the world. Rightly so, South Africa
can produce all the minerals necessary for her economic independence.
Gold, diamonds, platinum, chromium, manganese, uranium, ire ore and coal
make up 60 % of it's main exports. The country is also number one
globally in exporting platinum, chromium, vandium and manganese. Africa
is also the world's largest gold producer. It has enormous gold ore
reserves representing 40% of global reserves. ... read full story / add a comment

The issue of electricity in South Africa, in particular with ESKOM, is about the generation and distribution of electricity in Africa. As indicated in our country’s Constitution (in the bill of rights) electricity is a right. ESKOM has an attitude that electricity is a privilege not a right hence the ridiculous tariff increment of wanting to charge more than 53%. The Anti Privatisation Forum is condemning this increase and it is mobilising its constituencies against this proposed increase. ... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

... read full story / add a comment

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the East Asia crisis, which began in Thailand on July 2, 1997, and spread to Indonesia in October and to Korea in December. Eventually, it became a global financial crisis, embroiling Russia and Latin American countries, such as Brazil, and unleashing forces that played out over the ensuing years: Argentina in 2001 may be counted as among its victims. ... read full story / add a comment

It seems to me that it should be obvious to everyone who has a capacity to morally reason that economic policies that endorse the privatisation of everything we hold dear do not create economic opportunities for the majority of people in South Africa. In fact such policies exacerbate inequality and social injustice.

... read full story / add a comment

Labor rights in Haiti exist on paper but not in reality. ILO conventions 87 and 98 (1948 and 1949) are ratified by the government but there is no protection for trade union organizing and collective bargaining. The other two conventions (135 and 151[1]) dealing with representation have not been ratified. Union busting is done with impunity. There are weak structures to enforce labor rights. ... read full story / add a comment
