The LNP government has announced this week its planned changes to the JobSeeker payment in so-called Australia. After 27 years of no increases, they have decided to raise the dole from $40 a day all the way up to $43 a day. This leaves the payment far below the relative poverty line. The real concern with these changes is the increase to already draconian mutual obligations forced onto the unemployed.
As anarchists we understand that capitalism’s illusion of being consensual and contractual is a bald-face lie, so how then can we fight back against not just these changes but the entire rotten welfare system in this country?
There are already the usual calls of putting pressure onto the Labor Party who have shown time and time again they are no friends of those in poverty. We need to build popular power in the movements and build alliances. read full story / add a comment

«Δεν πρόκειται απλώς για ανασύνταξη των συνόρων, αλλά για αναδιατύπωση των δομών και του κρατικού συστήματος». read full story / add a comment

The Fine Gael party was confronted with angry scenes at not one but two different blockades during a meeting of the parliamentary party in Galway city yesterday.   Taoiseach Enda Kenny and his cabinet were attending their pre-budget think-in at the luxury Radisson hotel when some 30 students from the NUIG Free Education for Everyone (FEE) group and the Students’ Union blockaded the entrance in protest at the government’s policy of education cuts, registration fee increases and the ever-looming prospect of full fees.  They were joined by two dozen members of the Save Roscommon Hospital Alliance who were equally intent on showing the Fine Gael party what they think of their callous indifference to the welfare of the working class.  read full story / add a comment

The eviction blockade was a big success, thanks to everyone who turned out. But the struggle is far from over for Lenise and the rest of the families facing eviction this holiday season. Though CHA had indicated on Tuesday that they would ask management to work out a payment plan, now they are denying this and we may have to set the blockade back up at a moment’s notice. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday morning, two Mandela Park residents were assaulted by four Chippa security guards at the instruction of the local SANCO chairperson. The two residents along with 7 witnesses went to the police station to lay a charge against the guards. As retribution, the local SANCO chairperson laid a counter charge of intimidation against one of the residents who he ordered to be assaulted - backyarder Khaya Xintolo. Khaya was then arrested and kept in police custody for more than 11 hours even though the detective himself admitted that there was no case against Khaya.

The armed ANC takeover of Kennedy Road (including the death of at least 4 people and the exiling of 1,000 residents) has now been condemned all over South Africa and all over the world. This is a new era in South Africa. No longer can we pretend to be a 'rainbow nation' when political parties are actively supporting armed militia in attacks against independent social movements. But we do have an advantage: In the long run, we are doing what is right and therefore we will win.

Below you will find a huge list of statements, articles and blogs. read full story / add a comment
